The technical difference is that the Gallery allows direct upload from your harddisk, while in Your Photos the image has to be uploaded to a server (e.g. Photobucket) and linked to this section.
I find Photobucket is working very well for me.

I shan't be using the gallery at all, photos get lost in the sheer volume posted there. I have given up visiting it.
Needless to say I have not submitted anything to the gallery.
I tend to only look at the gallery by mistake if I have clicked wrongly whilst intending to look a the Weekly Competition.
