Portable data storage and a Linux question (or two)

What is the eee like then George. I am planning to wait for a 8GB one and buy from Clove.com, I may keep the Linux distro it came with or do a fresh install with Ubuntu which I presently run on a Dell. After I feel happy with the eee, which I think I will, then I will sell my Dell.

Here is an interesting link indeed:-

So it should be no problem to have UFRAW running

For details see the Wiki, "Photography using the Eee - The Gimp, RAW Editing".
Indeed it is. I have been trying to get UFRAW installed from the instructions given elsewhere on the site, but so far to no avail. Unfortunately, many of the people who give these instructions forget that they need to spell out every last detail to novices like me.

And I'm not even sure I need it. I have DCRaw working now, and that may be all I require.

I think the EEE is superb, and it could easily be used as the main computer provided you plug in separate keyboard, mouse, and monitor. And hard drives.

Hi George,

Thanks for that, sounds like finally I will have found a replacement for the Psion 7 that I used to have and loved, but the eee is so much more capable! I have already a 4GB stick and will use that as a backup device. I need to buy a USB CD as well, unfortunately I chose all Firewire to go with my Mac. otherwise I would already have a CD.

For what I want it for it is perfect. Notes/email/letters/html and web pages. Looking forward to the time they are over here.

George

My eeepc came in last week, a week or two late, and I have been playing around with (or should I say configuring ) it over the weekend.

First impressions are really positive. It's an absolutely perfect size for a portable computer and ideal for stuffing in the pocket of a rucksack. Keyboard and screen are adequate for the job intended; in fact, I'm typing this on my eeepc now (wouldn't want to type out War and Peace though!)

I installed the Gimp and Ufraw just now following the instructions found at: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:addrawphotoediting . Both installed fine although the Ufraw instructions could have done with emphasising that you need to install the development tools with the command
Code:sudo apt-get install build-essential

Once done, Ufraw compiled and installed perfectly and I can now open K10D .pef files in the Gimp via the Ufraw plugin. If you are still having problems installing Ufraw, drop me a line and I'll see if I can help.

Hello,

Sorry for not replying earlier; I have been away for a few days. I'll have another bash at all this over the weekend. Thanks for the offer of help.

Maybe something for the Mac users?

"Business analysts are joining the chorus of industry speculators claiming Apple will introduce a new small form-factor Mac at Macworld Expo in the New Year."

"Gene Munster predicts the device will host a 64GB flash drive, and may even feature multi-touch technology, similar to that of the iPhone."

I have been so tempted by these little gems. I've heard only good reports. However, I have a 12" Dell notebook with dual processors, 2GB RAM, 120GB of disk space and a good 5 hours of battery life. It isn't as small and neat as the Asus but it's a whole lot more practical for processing photos.

So, although I think I've now been at the online checkout three times with a single Eee in my basket. Common sense (is it?) has so far prevailed and I haven't actually ordered one.

The Eee PC is not a substitute for a full-size laptop, but it is fantastic as a small, light, cheap, well-sorted, travelling companion.

It is also finding a use in our house as an email machine for my nonagenarian parents. They find full-sized laptops too big and clumsy, but can cope with the Eee. I suspect we'll soon end up with three.

Good evening,

I try to install ufraw on my eee to view my K10d photos. Impossible to open an image. I have a message "cannot decode xxxx.pef"
The first install was directly with "sudo apt-get install ufraw". I have a message "cannot decode xxxx.pef".I remove It.
The second way was to follow the instruction of Adrian. I have the same message.
I don't understand.
Is there a special package to download ? Do you have a direct link?
It would be very happy to view my photos with Ufraw.
I try Bibble : it's very heavy and not stable on my eee. The price is also a problem.
Thanks in advance

Jean-Paul

PS : apologize for my english.

Hello Jean-Paul

What version of ufraw do you have installed (it should tell you in the 'ufraw options' 'about' tab)? I've got my eeepc open here as I'm typing and I've just opened up a K10D PEF raw file OK. The first thing you need to know is that the version in the Xandros repositories is quite an old one, version 0.10, and will not, from my experience, decode a K10D PEF file. It will do for the iST DS and the like but not the K10D or, presumably, the K20D either. In order to make it work, you're going to have to compile it from source code and the version you want is the 0.13 version obtained from the Ufraw website at http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/Install.html Do not bother with the .deb file you can get there; that's an old one again.

As I mentioned in my previous post, if you download the source code for version 0.13, use the instructions on the eeeuser wiki, you should be OK. But check the version you have installed and see that it's not 0.10.

Thank you for your message.
I try with the .010 which is stable
The 0.13 is "testing", that the reason I don't choose it.
Yesterday I try the 0.13 deb but I can't install it.
So, this week-end I Will try with the 0.13 sources.

Great thanks Adrian.
I download the sources on the page :
http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?group_id=127649&filename=ufra...
I follow your instructions and I have a perfect Ufraw 0.13.
I can now open my K10d raw.
I am not expert in Linux. It's my first one and it's only one week I buy my eee.
It seem possible to compile à deb and send it to friends in with the same problem. Anybody can help ?
Thanks in advance.
Jean-Paul
PS : I think I will translate in french and post it.

Hi
Well done George for persevering

I am thinking I need to replace/upgrade my Flashtrax, and I have loosely thought this machine might do the trick.

Is there a simple piece of Linux software that will simply transfer and read .DNG files?

I have loaded Gimp under Windioze and it seems to be a bit too extensive for what I am looking for and so unloaded it. I cannot remember if it recognised .DNG files
Keep up the good work
Graham

I'll think of something someday.

I've been playing with RAW Therapee, which feels nice but seems to have some bugs with its exposure module.

UFRAW mentioned above will open anything you can think of, and probably a number of RAW types besides. Its interface is basic but powerful, though I would advise ignoring its NR system and using something like NoiseNinja instead.

It is also quite possible to run Silkypix under WINE on the eee. It's a bit of a squeeze on the small screen, but it does run nicely even on my 2G model.
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help
