Personally I prefer the first one as the main flower gives the eye something to rest on. Imagine what the countryside must have looked like before herbicides.

I can't pick between 1 and 4 - though I do wonder what 4 would have been like as a portrait shot too. Your use of DoF throughout the series works for me.

I like 1 and 4 the best. One is a fine portrait of a poppy, and I like the bands of colour, and the feel for the masses of poppies in 4.
There were poppies and other wild flowers everywhere in southern France, but sadly there was also a strong wind most of the time, making photographing them impossible. It was noticeable the further north we came how the fields changed into barren prairies .

Thanks for the comments. I couldn't make up my mind either.
I have been looking for a nice crowd of poppies all week, I wanted to get some good close-ups and group shots. I was just passing Sunday when I saw the first field, stopped. Moved down the road and saw another even better and when the third field came along, even better, I wanted to capture the sheer scale of the view.

I think number four would have really worked if you could have singled out a poppy in the nearer foreground to give the eye something to lead into the image. It has to be number one for me this is nicely composed and shows the poppy in different stages of development.

The local farmer has put these fields into Organic production, hence the poppies in his cereals and beans.
