Polarising filter with DA*16-50

Does anyone have a recomendation for a polariser to use with the DA*16-50 f2.8 ?

Will I need an ultra thin one to avoid vignetting ?

I believe Hoya do an ultra thin one.Hoya Pro 1 D may thin enough also.A bit costly though. I picked up a Pro 1 D Circ Pol from Camera world for £52,cheapest I could find for a 67mm filter.HTH a little bit,

Ouch the Pro 1 D Circ Pol 77mm is not cheap !

I read an online comparison of polarising filters last week. Not scientific but seemed objective enough. Can't remember the link.

Anyway, the conclusion was that cheap polarisers with little or no coatings added a whole lot of flare and reflections to images in certain situations. They recommended B+W - which aren't cheap - and also said the Hoya Pro were pretty good. Interestingly they also wrote that the previous range of Hoyas, I think designated HMC and SHMC: were better performers than the latest range.

@pschlute: you're right the Pro range are not cheap but you've invested a lot of money in a great lens. If you believe the recommendations and my third-hand account of a test, why waste your lens investment by saving £50 on a filter?

I'm just a beginner but I read in a lot of places to invest in lenses, not camera bodies. You could think of the filters as an extension to the lens. I started a similar thread a while ago, lots of good advice from members. I eventually chose to get dedicated filters rather than a system and to wait longer before purchasing but to buy better quality.

Thanks for that. I quite agree that if I am going to put anything in front of the lens it will be the best quality I can get. I don't use any filters (uv ; skylight)normally on the lenses I own. The polariser is a one off purchase so it is worth going for the best.

B+W gets my vote

£72 AT Camera world.You can probably find cheaper.

The price at SRS has gone up significantly recently - so the others will probably follow soon.

I would go for the Pro 1 D - get the 77mm and if you have a DA*50-135 get a 77-67 step ring so it can be used there too.

I am not suggesting that the ones at CameraWorld are not Hoya, but there were a lot of fake ones around a few months back and there may be a thread about it.

@polchraine: Thanks for the info. Do you know if it is possible to fit/use the lens hood on the DA*50-135 if a 77-67mm step ring is used? I've taken a look - it seems it may be possible but I think the hood will have to be fitted before the filter and cannot be removed until after the filter is removed. Am I right?

Any tips for spotting a fake or questions to ask a retailer?

I don't have a polarising here (borrowed!) but have tried with a standard 77mm protector with no step ring and my DA*50-135 and it will fit inside the lens hood - just, so it will need some fiddling to get it in place once the hood is on and use a 77mm lens cap to grip. I don't think it could be done before fitting the hood.

As for fakes - no real idea, but ask the retailer - what will he say!

I am fortunate - I have a 67mm Pro1 (not D) from my 24-90 lens which now sits on the *istD.

@Polchraine: That's what I thought. I can see myself getting very frustrated with the fiddling, especially in the rain in winter... I guess it's always possible shoot the 50-135 without the hood - until I can afford a 67mm filter also.

Actually, I think it is another argument for buying from a reputable dealer like SRS or my local camera shop. I imagine the fakes are most likely to turn up on eBay, Amazon, etc?

Just seen your last post ...

An step ring will cost £10 of so. A little negotiation with a retailer for 2 small but expensive items could bring the prices down a little so think about getting both now.
