Pnetax 100DX?

Someone on another forum suggested that Pentax should put a 10 MP sensor in the K100D, just to bring it back into competition with the rest. Nikon have done it with the D40X to meet demand.
It's not that I think it needs 10MP but it loses out regularly in tests with the remark that it is only 6MP.
Just an idea should anyone form Pentax be reading this

I think to save confusion, that pentax will just add a new K1, or LXd to the lineup and kepp the k100 where it is.

I hope they drop 3 of those 6mp sensors into a 645 body, and create a killer, pro hi def camcorder/still image camera (think of a canon is3 on steroids. with interchangeable lenses) hybrid.

I cant see what all the fuss is about with 10mp cameras, 6mp is quite sufficient for most photographers who will rarely print above A4 and as for the masses, who needs 10mp for a 7x5 print from the lab?

I only bought the K10D myself* in order to have a little more leeway when cropping, as for size, I have yet to print off bigger than A4 myself.

Well 10MP is important if you want to display pictures for a large audience. You can print up to 90x60cm (standard poster size) to fit a good number of people arround. Not quite up to close inspection but A2 should ok, even then if you really want a crisp perfect image A4 10MP is perfect.

I'm trying to shift my business away from small sized prints altogether.
no more 8x10's, 5x7's etc.
what's the point? dvd's, screensavers, hdtv is where they can view and share anything that will fit into a scanner....nobody's likely to pull apart a $700.00 (or more) 20x24 framed print fold it up and slide it into a scanner at walmart!

So I concede, my viewpoint has changed, as our product, (and our clientele) get a little more upscale, size does matter.

but how many people buying K100s are using them professionally?

I'd say few to none.

I bought my K10D because of the SR, 9 frame buffer and controls, in that order. the increase in resolution did not enter into the question even though I have several lenses which can make good use of it.

My point exactly, anything above A4 is going to be a semi-pro print or at least a very dedicated amatuer, the K100D was aimed at joe public who just wants a DSLR to photograph the kids and the dog (where are you Pete ) and then gets them run off at the local lab, IMHO anyone who aspires to anything more is not going to buy anything less than a K10D unless its as a starter or second body.

PS: Pete, if your reading this thread and have definately decided to move to Spain, what about poor Merlin? Heres a happy thought, wouldnt it be cheaper to get another K10D body than pay for Merlins passport and innoculations etc etc

I know, and you know that 10MP is not the be all and end all of digital camera life, but when newbies are looking at cameras they will go for the Nikon D40X over the Pentax 100D simply because it has more pixels. They will ignore the limitations of the D40X and the advantages of the 100D and go for megapixels -every time. It seems a shame that such a fine camera should lose out simply based on the size of the sensor.

True, it is very difficult to compete, especially when people think that doubling pixel count doubles resolution and quality. It is actually a power 2 curve which means they you need four times the pixel count to double the resolution.

L is line widths per pixel height

M is millions of pixels

10MP is approximately 2250LW/PH and 6MP is 1730, so only 30% increase in resolution. It is still significant, but not what most people would expect which is a 67% increase from pixel count.

Spain is on hold at the moment. I did get offered two jobs but could not take them because the pay needed to be a bit more as I have to keep the payments up on my mortgage in the UK. Renting an apartment in Spain would mean a big payout each month for both properties. Yes I could sell or rent my house in the UK but it was very short notice to sort things out and I dont really at this stage want to sell it.

I am not sure if any of you are aware but I work part time for the Police and I am now thinking of trying to go in full time instead of the Spain move.




Spain is my first love as I lived and worked their for 10 years and no doubt I will move back there in the future.

As for Merlin well he is my treasure and I would not leave him for anything in the world.
