Playing with Elements

I decided to try playing with Elements, inspired by this months Elements Techniques magazine.

very cool looks like a painting not a photograph

The suggestion seems to be that looking like a painting is a good thing? Why would that be?

Nothing personal but I always question this as it seems to suggest that photography is a lesser art than painting. I like paintings, I like photos and rejoice in their differences.

This is the thing, tricks like this as well as HDR are pointless and shallow, IMO of course.

Only if the intent is pointless and shallow....like everything else, these are techniques that can be used to good effect when the circumstances are right. IMHO of course, as always!

Yeah, but i've seen such beautiful photographs of landscapes, urbanscapes and nighttime cityscapes, and other genre of photographs, with such beautiful light and content that would never warrant the use of some HDR treatment.

You never smiled at the end of your post John, unlike me.

John I agree - when the technique is appropriate then it enhances the photograph but I object to the idea that 'being like a painting' is a 'very good thing'.

So then in turn I agree with Pauly that these techniques are misapplied so many times it makes you wary of their application.

My word this fence is uncomfortable!

i think its cool that someone can do that to a photograph but i did not mean that its a good thing i agree with mike
photography is my passion and i do try to not alter my photos at all as it then detracts from being a photograph at all and becomes more of a computerised image the photo painting(whatever we calling it) does look like it would of been an excellent photo though gwynn

Well at least this photo got some responses, even if most of them are not positive.

I just wanted to see what Elements can do. It is a very powerful tool, and I use only a small amount of it. I'm not saying the effect is good or bad. It was an experiment. I bet most of you never use the full power of Elements or the even more expensive CS2/3/4 that you own do you?

It was a lousy photo to start with and I actually quite like the effect. Who says photos must remain photos - if we have all this computing power and ability to do other things with them then why not? Why is it any different to HDR, B/W conversion, colour popping, cloning out bits you don't like or changing the colour of something in a photo? Surely one of the joys of digital photography is that we can do things like this?

I can't see anything wrong in playing about and seeing what comes out.

Neither do I. We can learn a lot by doing that.

i dont think they is anything wrong in experiements gwyn as i said i think its cool all this stuff you can do with software packages these days but to me photography is not about that and as for hdr i dont like that either or cloning as such if the shots not right in the first place dont take it IMO as i said you may as well just sit at the computer and forget about taking a photo all together something like a bin in the way of a perfect landscape shot not a problem but thats as far as it goes with me and black and white is not conversion IMO it is after all how it all started and changing colour etc is enhancing in some cases not changing the photo completley
