Well, in desperation to photograph something..anything, tonight I decided to try a "still life" with whatever we had available. So I raided the fruit bowl and came up with this.
It was shot in Manual with my £11 Prinzflex lens. Doesn't seem too bad, when I remember to use it poperly

C&C please.

Still life is not easy. Composition is vital, technique needs to be impeccable. See gartmore's portfolio for a really superb example.

Here there are a number of problems in terms of technique, such as the pineapple not being totally sharp and disappearing into the blackness and the red apples being overlit and having hot spots.

I would suggest re-shooting, experimenting with the composition some more and making sure that the smallest possible aperture is used whilst not going too far so that the definition falls off again. I suspect the Prinzflex lens will actually just keep improving with stopping down.

Other than that, the concept is sound and you have the potential here to make something of it. Perhaps a Version 2 can carry on the idea?

Hope that helps!
Best regards, John

Thanks guys.
The pineapple was cut up 5 minutes later, so I'll have to buy another, but that's no hardship. I enjoy playing around with the lighting / flash etc. so I'll re-shoot and post again

OK, taken on board what was said. Stopped the lens down a little more and tried again.
What do you think?

Prefer the vertical format of no2, but still some hot spots on the apples, and maybe a lighter background might improve the image?
Agree with Gareth, perhaps the fruit needs to be a stop or so darker
Is the pineapple straight, or have i had to much to drink?
On my monitor it certainly looks sharp enough.
Have always meant to try still life, but never seem to have an idea, so full marks for trying.
