Photoshop symbol??

I don't have Elements 9 on either of my Macs, but one thought does come to mind:
Have you deleted a file that was not a picture per se, but was actually some sort of database file for keeping track of the pictures, or for storing thumbnails?
How about re-installing Elements, to see if that recreates the file structure?

I've never used Elements but is it possible you are overwriting (i.e. erasing) the original photo? That's got to be some kind of 'broken link' icon.

Thanks guy's. Yes I think it was some kind of broken link icon. Have reinstalled elements and things appear to be ok again.

As a beginner to photoshop Elements 9 I foolishy went and deleted the photo's out of my Pictures folder on my mac thinking they were not needed. realised then that they were when i went to try and open a picture in the organizer and it could not find it. So I just deleted my photo library in the organizer and have just started again.
Uploaded some pics tonight but when i edit them and then either "save as" or just "save" to the same pictures folder the original pic changes to the symbo; below. whats going wrong??
