Sounds like a re-installation of Photoshop is in order.
Btw, is this Elements or full-blown Photoshop? And do you have enough RAM in your machine? Could also be a RAM fault.

Yes, I agree that 3 GByte RAM is OK. But you could have a faulty memory block within those 3 GByte.
I would try to a) run a memory check or b) swap the memory cards one by one to see if one of them is faulty.

Are you using a laptop or a desktop? CS5 is very graphics intensive which can cause your computer to overheat and will turn itself off for safety.
Is your fan working and is it noisy? That could indicate a high temperature.
Or if your fan is quiet it could be broken.

I'm using a laptop, so that might make sense. The fan seems to be working ok and is not noisy, but the compuer does seem to get very hot sometimes. I might try getting one of those lapttop stands with a fan in them and see if it improves things. Thanks for the reply!

I have seen computers that run memory checks quite happily, but there is still a memory fault present. The only way to check is really to replace one module at a time and try the application again.

In terms of heat, if I'm running a batch process I tend to leave the laptop overhanging the desk with the vent clear.
If you're feeling brave you could try cleaning the vent which may help (but I take no repsonsibility for any damage).
Do you know if you're running 64 bit Windows as this will increase the power in use?
There is a program (do a search for it) called MobileMeter which can monitor the laptop's temperature.
