You are using generate from the HDR menu, and then on the HDR menu pressing "tone mapping" yeah?
Once there, my usual settings are an average strength (50-70), whatever saturation (keep it <80 most cases though), then furthest right or second furthest right bar on light smoothing, then most cases, a luminosity above 2. The micro settings, contrast i leave to full, the other i mess round with.
Then if its still weird, play with the gamma.
By the way, I use hdr to sort out under/overexposed photos that cant be done manually, therefore I keep the effect as subtle as possible; I hate generic looking HDRs.
