Further improvement can be made with the notebook and one of those pencils with a rubber on the end.
Gives you full word processing capabilities!
Seriously, If you want to make note taking quicker, just draw on some columns with iso, fstop, shutter speed or what ever else you want to record.
You could also use the EXIF info, for the camera settings, that are already recorded with the image as you take it. Saves having to make notes at the time.

The Pentax software provides / records all the information frame by frame for review and archiving in a very user friendly way, which is my preferred method.
Combining this with the information mode that can be displayed on playback in the camera itself when in the field, the system provides a very comprehensive data log for reference to work with.
Additionally, if this software is not the chosen photo editing software then, for example photoshop provides the same data records; albeit in "maybe" a slightly less convenient way, but that is my own subjective opinion having become very familiar with the Pentax Utility software

For those of us who shoot old lenses we don't get which lens is being used or the f-stop recorded in the exif.
I would recommend a "rite-in-the-rain" notebook which survives even the worst rain, just like a Pentax camera.

Only problem is that the old lens probably isn't weatherproof!

At one time small notebooks were made that contained spaces for all the details to be recorded of every shot. Typically, these would be the size of a pocket diary. They haven't been used for many years, but might be found at camera fairs.
Digital cameras record the information anyway, so maybe notebooks are no longer needed as much.

If you have an Android smartphone, take a look at the free "Photographer's Notebook BETA" app.
Not sure if it is available for iPhones, but there are more apps out there for both Android and iPhone, both free and paid.
