I would also urge an ePhotozine style limit to size and quantity.
When people post extremely wide images, Ihave to scroll to the right (19" monitor too) to read the text. 800X640 should be the absolute maximum, and no more than 2 per day to prevent abuse of the system.

Perhaps we should make that two per month, and make people earn the right to post more.
And penalties for posting the same pic more than once.

I'd think 2 per day max with 800x600 max image size but if people want to develop their skills should we limit their posts :
How do you propose that people earn the right to post more George :

I think they could buy picture posting coupons. I'd be happy to adminster the scheme. The cost of a coupon would be a bottle of Bowmore's.

I support the idea of a separate section.
As to the number per day / week / month, that is somewhat trickier.
I am happy to see any number of stunning photographs but would not want to see endless 'run of the mill' shots.

I support the idea.
I like helping people.
I don't think we'd need a terrible amount of "controls" as some feel we need.
After all, if one or two individuals post image after image after image, the regulars here are smart enough to know which posters to avoid.
Anybody clicking there would know there's gonna be lotz of images, and therefore slower downloads.
last but not least, references to the image gallery could be used (and linked to) from any other threads, eliminating the need to post images in other threads.
could solve alot of problems, and maintain the level of help available to all.
from those that want straight answers, to specific problems, to those that just like to "throw it out there" and gage the response.

Don't forget this is a forum, and photos are not uploaded to it, but are linked from other sites.
ePHOTOzine already does what you are suggesting, doesn't it?

I think the odd, relevant image in a thread is a good thing, and wouldn't want to move away from that (mainly because, if when posting a reply I suddenly realised I had an image that painted a thousand words, I'd have to open another thread in the gallery page, post an image to that, then carry on with the original topic).
By all means, have a general gallery/critique section, where we could put pics that we:
a) Are happy with, and purely want to share
b) Are happy with, but want other's opinions
c) Are unhappy with, and want advice as to how it could be improved.
but please don't say that's the only place we should post images.

Here are my opinions.
As I have said in another thread, I would definitely like to see a cure for the recent watering down of the main PENTAX issues with all the photo critique posts. Each picture submitted usually takes up pages of critiques, rebuttles and multiple posts of the same or similar tweaked photo.
I personally would find it a lot less inconvenient to click on a link to see a picture than I do scrolling back and forth to read the text after someone has posted an inapproriately large photo. If photos in the body of the post are allowed then we need a rule about maximum size.
I agree with John Riley that the sister site Ephotozine is the proper place to show off your photos, why duplicate it here? Yes I know, this is a photgraphy forum and photos are what we produce, but it is primarily a forum about all things PENTAX so IMO unless it specifically has something to do with the PENTAX brand why is it being posted here? There are probably hundreds of other places on the web to share your photos and get or give critiques. However, if the P-UK members choose to continue to share their good works here then I do vote YES purely to provide a seperate space for it.
BTW, I can't find the place to submit my vote for the coupon system George.
Regards
Drew

I post pictures here because this is the only online photography place that I frequent - I'm not interested in using ePhotozine or wherever. I post images because I think they're either relevant, or may be of interest, or, very occassionally, to show off a bit to a small 'community' of people I like.
Many of the things discussed here are not specific to Pentax, they're just about photography.
I would argue that this forum isn't solely about "all things Pentax", just that the majority of the people here are "Pentax Users", that being the name of the forum.
I agree that we should have a limit on image dimensions when posted, it is annoying to have to scroll side to side to read text. But I think it would lose it's appeal if all we are allowed to discuss are Pentax "issues", there's a lot more to photography than the brand of camera you use, and I'd rather have one place to discuss it, rather than ten.

Whilst ephotozine has a photo gallery, the normal level of critique is "5 people like this photo" or "Great colours, good photo". There is generally no serious attempt to be critical, either constructive or destructive, it's just generally a comment.
If I submit a photo to ephotozine, I would not expect to get critical evaluation from people I know and respect, whereas, here I would and it would normally be much more useful.

What I tend to do is this: If I want to show off "my brilliant photograph" I put it on Ephotozine, and if I refer to it here I post a link as an using the [url] codes, if it is to make a point about a topic that needs to be seen to make the point, I post a link using [img] so that it appears in the thread.

And you can do it, no-one is saying you can't.
Personally I post my picture a day on ePHOTOzine to share images as widely as possible, and I welcome any feedback anyone cares to give.
Occasionally I will post a picture in a forum (here or elsewhere) if it makes a particular point, or maybe if I like it so much I want to spread it further.
My suggestion is do whatever you feel comfortable with.

I think if posting of photos for sharing and critique purposes is allowed and encouraged here, then there should be a forum for it. Photo threads don't really fit in any of the current forums so they get scattered all over the place.
After all, we are about "all things Pentax" as someone mentioned earlier, and surely the photos we take with our Pentax gear are one of the most important "things Pentax"?
Photos for technical issues are a different matter altogether and should certainly be allowed wherever they are relavent, though personally I would like to see an 800x600 size limit, having to scroll to read the text puts me off reading a thread.

I would like to see a section where images are posted for comments but where the person who posts the image is very clear abouth what they need comments on. EG Lighting, exposure, focus etc...
Also that everybody who uses it has thick skin and welcomes constructive comments.
