You already own the copyright in your photos and don't need to do anything.
If the newspapers have used your images without permission, as they can't unpublish them ( a website could take them down) you might consider sending them an invoice.

What John said, but also, pretty much every camera has the ability to add copyright to the exif data. It just needs to be set up.
K3, K3 II, 100MM 2.8 Macro, Sigma 10-20 3.5, Sigma 17-50 2.8, Nikon D7500, Tamron 150 600 G2

Ditto in Lightroom and probably other PP software as well. That gives you the option to add copyright with your name to an online image or omit for prints.

reso hasn't suggested how the papers got hold of his photos. If from social media sites the exif often gets stripped so the copyright added that way gets lost. An indiscreet superimposed sig somewhere in the photo can help.

I'm quite sure that having the original plus other shots taken at the same place would be good enough to prove Copyright. There's bound to be a Freelance site that explains it.

I now know what happened and Reso has confirmed it's OK for me to say here. Reso sent some of his car photos to the crews concerned and it was they who submitted the photos to the papers. So presumably the papers wouldn't have queried it.
Local papers don't normally pay much (if anything) for submitted photos these days so I wouldn't think it is worth making much of a fuss over.
Given Reso has provided the means for the crews to get some free publicity, if chased perhaps they might get him a free pass to an event and a private photo shoot. Might work out well all round with a closer inside link to the sport he likes. I hope so.

I am using Add Text and Timestamp on Gallery Photos to add copyright stamps on my photographs. Works pretty well for me.

These problems can be avoided by simply specifying what images can be used for when giving them away. And giving them away is the concern here if they’re given to a commercial organisation with no restrictions then they will be used how they want.
Local news pays very little for images. I had an image of a local shop on fire and finally settled on a fee of £25 and then had to remind them numerous times to pay me.
I now do a lot of PR work for companies that ends up in the papers where the company pays me for my time and licensing far more lucrative than sending to local newspapers and my work is still published in the local rag win win

Nah I’m used to 24megapixel 7fps now so wouldn’t settle for less than that now

I'd have trouble recomposing the photo in the frame to take another one repeatedly in under half second intervals.
Surely a seconds worth of photos at 7fps means they must be almost all the same so does it matter how many it takes? If it's to capture a specific instance in an explosion or something video or dedicated hi-speed camera is the way to go.
