Regarding Macs you know you are facing a losing argument, so why even argue? There are probably less than a couple dozen instances of malware for OS X, and perhaps a few hundred for OS 9 and earlier. Compare that to, oh I dunno, a hundred thousand pieces of malware for Windows.
But it only takes one virus to cause a lot of hassle. The difference is that a sensible PC user will have anti-virus software installed, whereas most Mac users seem very cavalier about the need for any at all.

I've used a PC for about 10 years now, and never had a virus affect my computer. That's because I make sure I have anti-virus software installed. I'd do the same if I were using a Mac.

The netherlands is the source of the problem so we have quite some news about it but it's just 3 days old but spreading over the border now.
Here is an English report link

Dan already have given my answer, it only takes one.

edit: better link

Okay after a bit of further Googling I found some reports of the worm Stefan is referring to . It appeared last week, is currently in the Netherlands only, and specifically attacks users of the ING iphone banking site.

Dan
We could argue about this forever (and some people on the internet do! ). A part of my business is disinfecting PCs for small businesses. At a guess I'd say 95+% of them do have anti-virus software installed. On the other hand I have owned and used a Mac for over 20 years, and I haven't had any antivirus software installed for the last 10 or so. I've also never had a virus.

Now that's out of the way (having defended the faith as it were :mrgreen, you are completely right about prevention being better than the cure.

Ok I'll take your word for it However I still think you are somewhat overstating the threat here. This worm only affects people who are (a) technically savvy enough to jailbreak their iPhone, but who are also (b) stupid enough to not change the SSH password despite many warnings in the jailbreak instructions.

Yeah I know Tim but it's funny that it happened to Apple since the where no viruses right?
This is also a step into making one for the non jailbreak iPhones, it's only a matter of time really.

What you said about not having an anti-virus program for the Mac.
If you've a business and use a Mac for that then it would be wise to have one, not for yourself but for you customers that use a PC.
A mac can be use to spread viruses between PC's without being infected.
I wonder how a customer would react if a virus warning come up with your e-mail

Of course this also true for home-user that you can infect your friends pc.

Hmmm. Perhaps I'm just being stupid - as already noted I have worked with computers for over 20 years, and I also have a degree in computer science. Apart from forwarding an already infected attachment I don't see how I can pass on any malware to a PC user.

I don't forward anything, before you ask , and the only attachments I ever send are PDF invoices.

For an application to run natively on the iPhone it has to pass Apple's approval system.

You cannot install anything on the phone at all that hasn't been officially approved by Apple. Apple would not approve a virus, therefore iPhone users are perfectly safe. You're only gonna get stung if you're doing what you ain't suppose to be doing!
