Nigel, I like the interesting compositions, but in the first one the mid tones just seem a bit dark to me - artistic effect or was the lighting like that?
Cheers.

Philip, as so often, you are spot on with your analysis! I was attracted to the bright reflected sunshine on the white cliffs and boat, and decided to emphasize that. So I reduced the midtones on the water in the middle, also to bring out the depth of colour, and this boosted the contrast between midtones and the whitepoint. I also raised the blackpoint in the darker area behind in order to lower the distractions behind the rocks. .....
Creative editing, yes, and a bit of making more of what nature threw at me! Does it work, that's the question ....

The first is from the approach to the headland from the hilltop taken with the Tamron AF70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 ....
and the second from down on the rocks at the point is with the SMC F35-70mm 1:3.5-4.5 .... Both with the K7 (of course)!
The white cliffs and stacks of the Old Harry Rocks are at at the tip of the far headland in both images, and beyond that is the coastline at Bournemouth with the buildings visible also.
Many thanks for taking a look
