Petal lens hood clip out section ?

The lens hood [PH-RBA] that comes with the DA 18-55mm lens has a clip-out panel at the bottom. Can anyone tell me what this is for ? Have picked up lens and hood second hand - first impression very positive - but this has me puzzled.

It's so that you can rotate a polarising filter with the hood on.

Tony - Thank you - what a sensible idea and so obvious now you have pointed it out ! I've not used a polarising filter with my digital camera [K10] although I have one for my old ME Super. I may invest and have a play. Thanks again.
