Pentax vs nikon

Can't argue with that..
We all want the best our money can buy, spend hours researching how best to spend it before making a choice.
Then once we have it the grass starts to look greener on the other side again. Complex species us hoomans..
I came to the conclusion a while back that there' no point in having the best possible gear if you don't use it.
I've been guilty of buying acc's which I thought were cool and would be fun to use only to find they sit on the shelf after the initial 'play' period passes. Same with the Pentax cameras, for a while I was enthused enough to buy new ones just to have a copy of one (K-50/K-01/MX-1/Q) but I don't need them at all. The K-7 was plenty enough. But like many I gave in to temptation. Although I sold the K-7 as the K-50 is superior in many way, I now regret it. Thing is, these days the first camera I pick up is usually the MX-1.
I have never fallen victim to LBA, however..

It's nice to have the choice, different models excel at different things.

I too use the MX-1 extensively and it excels at general shots and macro in particular. The Q-S1 kit is the fun kit for experimentation, but powerful in its own right for say concert shooting and surprisingly competes with the DSLRs very well.

The K-5 is the kit for the best quality, no doubt about that, so for weddings, paying work in general and serious trips to places where photography is guaranteed to be the main purpose.

The grass always looks greener over the fence, but guess what? It has to be mown over there, too!

Any 'decent' pro would/should have suggested you take the time to familiarise yourself with your camera rather than buying 'their' choice (unless perhaps they had a collection of exotic lenses they were willing to lend to you).

Yes, that's just not professional behaviour frankly. A professional should take the responsibility to know about and understand the range of systems and be skilled enough to adapt their technical points to that.


As I said a while back here, it may have been a fair point that the entry level K500 was lacking some features that were integral to the techniques being taught. However, the right guidance for that should have been to explore with the student what models were more appropriate within the students chosen system ... It wouldn't take long to find one .... Instead he chose to behave more like a salesman than a teacher.

The only thing I wish was that the Pentax 35mm f/2.4 was f/2 and had an SMD motor like the Nikon equivalent.

I'd buy the 31mm f/1.8 but don't have (and can't justify) £1000+ to spend on a lens!

Just for anyone's interest: Microglobe show the 31mm at £599.
