Pentax Teleconverters

Just a quick question about Teleconverters and Pentax! Have they stopped making them, and if so does anyone know the reason? I personally have never used one, but am very interested in buying one. However, from the info I have been reading on the web Sigma would appear to be an option although limited.

I am looking at buying a fast zoom Pentax or Sigma and pairing it with a Teleconverter when I need more focal length, I want to use it for a action shots mainly. Any ideas or advice anyone.

Many Thanks

Pentax do not currently make any converters.

There was an SDM version on the Pentax lens roadmap but it was then removed.

The Pentax 1.7 converter appears secondhand from time to time and theoretically new ones are available, apparently assembled from spares.

Pentax converters have a very good reputation.

I had a Pentax 645 converter which was pretty impressive, my experience with other ones has not been a happy one, none IMO give acceptable results, particularly with zoom lenses. Other people may, however, find the results perfectly acceptable.

The Sigmas are only compatible with their non HSM range of fast lenses and although work very well (I use them with the 70mm macro, 70-200mm f2.8 and 100-300mm f4) because Pentax AF is pretty slow to start with once you fit the teleconverter you can more or less forget fast action shots.

The Pentax 1.7x is very good but again the AF is mostly pedestrian at best.

The (now discontinued) Tamron 1.4x TC is pretty good and fetches a good price. The Pz-AF Teleplus (Kenko) 1.5x, 1.7x and 2x 7 element are the best available at present if you want SDM compatibility.

A word of warning re-Sigma converters

They do not convey the extended focal length to the camera, stick a 2x on a 300mm lens and the camera still thinks its a 300mm lens, which really stuffs up using the SR when you need it the most.

Ditto Teleplus and everything else I've tried.

With the Pentax 1.7x it asks you the focal length and reports it in the Exif so SR should be working crrectly.

Does anyone have a Pentax 1.7x they would like to part with? Sounds like they are my best option. Many thanks for your comments.
