Yeah, I saw that. Even if it does perform superbly wide open at f/1.4, it's still a hell of a price to pay for it.

But some people will pay it, take photos of their cats with it on their D3 and be happy.

Unfortunately those astronomical prices don't necessarily mean performance that outstrips Pentax lenses. When the 43mm was introduced it was found to happily out-perform the Zeiss 50mm Planar, for example.

Possibly so. Having said that I don't think lenses or cameras are expensive. Not when we think of the huge investment behind them and the level of technology and complexity involved.

It is a elegant looking lens, the Zeiss, but boy that is a tad pricy.
I wonder how much better it is than my Mamiya-Sekor M42 mount 55mm F1.4 which cost me a mighty £30!

Law of diminishing returns will say better, but 100 times?

I've tried that explanation with my wife, it doesn't work.
