PENTAX REMOTE Assistant v3.51 works fine on Windows XP but I can't get it to recognize my K20D camera on Vista at all. Does anybody here have the same problem or has a solution?

I don't know about the K20, but PRA 3.51 works fine with my K10 and Vista.

I got it to work by checking the "Run this program as an administrator" box in the properties of the PENTAX REMOTE Assistant shortcut under the Compatibility tab.
I was going to delete this post, but I figured that others might have run into the same issue.

That's also what I have to do. Glad you found the solution to your problem.

Spent an hour or so trying to get PRA to recogognise my K20 to no avail. So thought I would search the forums, and hey presto, now I'm connected.
Thanks for for your post !!

Thanks to the "Run as administrator" tip I am running Remote Assistant successfully on my Windows 7 laptop.

One thing I did notice, which may or may not be helpful, or general was: if I inserted an SD card into the SD slot on the computer and used the "ready boost" facility to improve computer performance then Remote Assistant would no longer find and operate the camera. When I remove the ready boost functionality the camera re-appeared.

Had PRA working fine with W7 Ultimate x64, after setting to 'run as Administrator', but now I've added 'XP Mode' via the 'Virtual PC' it's not playing any more !

Seems to be ignoring the USB connect as it blinks slightly when I turn camera on, then just sits idly waiting for me to connect !?

Anyone help !?

As the old story goes, a guy walks into a doctors office and says "doc, my arm hurts when I move it this way." Doctor replies "Well then, don't do that".

If it is working under Win7, why run it under XP mode?
I assume you mean compatibility mode. But still why fix it if it ain't broken.

If you mean simply that you have Virtual PC running on your Win7 and that XP is running within the Virtual Box, I have heard of issues with VirtualPC v.s. USB devices. Can't recall anything specific, but Google for that and you may find how to fix it, or perhaps that you should just go to VMWare or other solution.

Still, in the end, I have to ask why -- if it works under the native Win7 to begin with.

I think u missed the point ! Completely !!

It DID work in W7, but not now I've added Virtual PC and XP mode ! I added XP Mode for an old scanner

Not sure how I missed your point. You seemed to confirm my questions and statements.
- If you have Win7 working, why run it under XP, especially under a VM?
- VMs can have issues with USB devices. We run into such issues on a regular basis with the software we write and have to periodically verify against actual hardware.

Are you saying since you added VirtualPC and XP mode that it no longer runs natively under Win7?
That sounds problematic, but some reason I'm not surprised. Win7x64 has lots of issues with devices (not Win7 or Microsoft's fault - as easy as it would be to blame them - but x64 has some strict requirements for drivers that just might not be completely supported. Still, if it was working on Win7x64 to begin with, not sure why it would have stopped.

I cannot even get Pentax remote Assistant to load onto the computer running windows 7. I have tried opening it as Administrator with no luck. Do you have any idea of how to load the program in the first place?
