Pentax Remote Assistant...

I've been playing with this for a bit, and it seems to do exactly what it says...

One question though, and I apologize if I missed it in the manual... When a picture is saved, it goes to the PC's hard drive (as expected), but is there any way to get it to also go to the SD card? (call me paranoid, but I'd like to have it in both places...)

Nope, you did not miss anything. That is not an option.

on the mac, you can drop it into a smart folder and use iether applescript or automator to rename, copy, move, resize, backup or even process with other apps automattically. (Any combination of the above is possible).

you could even drop it into Idisk and have it ready to share on the net.
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Thanks for the reply - even if it's not what I wanted to hear...

Don - Have already started writing a script to simulate that function on my PC (somewhat of an experiment - more used to mainframes than PC's)... Sounds like I need to take another look at a Mac - it's been about 10 years since I last looked...

ive just installed firmare 1.20 on my K10 and downloaded remote assistant but i seem to have a problem. I see nothing but i white screen in the window on my desktop. If i change a setting on the desktop it changes on the camera, dust removal works via the desktop etc etc. It will even release the shutter but takes no picture.

Any ideas??

When you power on your K10D and hold Menu, does it say that the firmware is in fact 1.20? (i.e. did it update properly?) I suspect this is OK, for me the K10D was not even detected until the firmware was upgraded.

When the shutter is released, does the green progress bar in the lower right of remote assistant show the image being transfered at all?
How about no the camera, does the LCD show the image or are images stored on the camera? Or are they stored on the hard drive anyway?

Try using the camera's shutter release button. Does it have the same effect? (It should work the same either via the computer or via the camera when connected).

The new remote assistant has the same problem as the *istD one, it does not like being plugged into certain USB hubs (unpowwred ?). I had all sorts of problem with the D until I figured it out, it would not work with the USB hub I had (unpowered cheapo) but worked plugged staight into the PC, a Belkin powed hub cured the problem. This new one seems to have the same problem, works fine connected to the PC or the Belkin hub but will not work plugged into the hub on my Epson printer.

Hope this helps.
Cheers
Brian.

Maybe you've got a USB 1 extension? The K10D is USB2 and uses a much higher data rate.
As an aside - we had a Dell LCD with built in hub that worked intermittently. We recently rewired the PC using a new, longer, USB cable and the thing has been fine since. It was the cable all along

Hi Mattmatic
As a matter of interest do you know if there is a limit to the length of of USB2 extension cable which may be used when with the REMOTE Assistant Software and a K10D in this set up. ?

The USB spec says that 5m of cable should be possible. However, that would depend to a large extent on the quality of the cable.

If I get a mo' I'll try and set it up with a couple of meters (which should normally be more than enough).

Not really any limit on the software...

In general the limit should be about 5 meters for USB2 device. Although perhaps 3 meters or so is probably a safer guess at a reliable length.
You can also daisy-chain a limited numbers of hubs to get longer length but that is sort of a pain in the rear.

Any USB 2.0 compliant device should adhere to that.
