Pentax Q7

Just been reading about this on the US forum. Always said the sensor was too small on the original Q and the price was too high.

Of course the original Q has plumtted in price and will plummet even more following the release of a Q7.

What about the Q10? Will this be discontinued?

If I read this correctly, the Q7 is an MX (same sensor and processor) with interchangeable lenses. Fantastic!

All this "new" gear seems a bit marginal to existing users I think. I own a Q and a K30 and my first reaction is what's new? WIth the Q clearly the main feature is the larger sensor. But the picture quality for the sort of thing I would use a Q for is already very good in my opinion. It remains to be seen if there is some really significant improvement anywhere with the Q7 or K90. Good for new users though I think.

There can't be too much left out there for manufacturers to improve on in an order of magnitude that would raise eyebrows. How about all prices cut by 50%?

That would at least bring smiles to faces.

Should be a cracker, after all the Q is capable of great things, so the Q7 with a bigger sensor and no AA filter should be very good little thing

The Q7 (why not Q5?) does look interesting. I think it could do very well. The larger sensor will make a big difference. Pity they didn't put that size sensor in the Q in the first place. I really never saw the point of the Q10 and now it makes even less sense. I'd be a bit hacked off if I had bought one. I can imagine it ending up in cornflake packets now. I could see a reason to still buy a Q because of the different (arguably better) styling and (definitely) better materials quality, but no reason at all to buy a Q10. There must be loads to shift.

My wife got a Q10 recently. A larger sensor and better AF are all very worthy upgrades but having tested the Q10 out over the weekend, what it was really crying out for in my opinion was a better LCD screen. Using the LCD to compose shots in bright daylight at unfavourable angles involved a lot of guesswork as to what was in the shot because it was not possible to actually see it properly.

I compared it side by side with the gapless LCD screen on the K-5 II and that was clearly way, way better. This brought me to the conclusion that Pentax really needed to incorporate that technology into the next Q-series camera, after all the LCD screen is the only composition tool available on the Q. Looks like they haven't.

I might consider getting a future Q model for myself, but only if they improve the LCD screen (or add a decent EVF without increasing the size too drastically).

You can buy a little optical viewfinder paired with the 01 lens... oh, but it won't be matched to that focal length any more!

There's an identical viewfinder for the GR, so maybe that one will be closer. If not, then a new one for the Q7 could be on the release list soon.

GR is 24mm equiv. 01 on the Q7 will be 35mm equiv.

Doh! haven't read the hands on preview yet... it wasn't mentioned in the blurb I read. Still, I think I would have to try it out 'new anti-reflective coating' doesn't sound like the same technology used in the K-5 II so it may be less (or more) effective.
