This is a shot I took with K10D and a Sigma 135-400mm. I hope this shows the quality you can get from a Pentax camera.

Since Pentax (and some others) turned it's face to the wall about a real lens range and went for the big flashy zooms and 'bottlecap' lenses instead, there is no way out for this requirement other than the Hartblei 35mm Rotator in M42 which is also discontinued.
What has actually happened is that Pentax have done their sums and concluded, no doubt correctly, that thanks to the techniques mentioned by JR there is little demand today for perspective lenses. That being the case, it would be impossible for Pentax to produce them at a price that anybody would be prepared to pay.Since Pentax (and some others) turned it's face to the wall about a real lens range and went for the big flashy zooms and 'bottlecap' lenses instead, there is no way out for this requirement other than the Hartblei 35mm Rotator in M42 which is also discontinued.

Do you have a technical camera? Is it an essential part of your photography?
Most of us only buy a few lenses, some don't buy any, so for the amateur the absence of a particular lens in a range can be largely academic. Even professionals don't buy those ultra-rare lenses, they hire them as required.
The original question here was Pentax or Sony and the realistic answer for me has to be Pentax. The pricing structure of many Carl Zeiss lenses would make that choice out of reach in any event and the difference in quality one way or the other will be insignificant.
I would pose a different question to a newcomer and that would be Pentax or Nikon?
