Pentax or Samsung?

I was surprised too when I saw it. I haven't looked elsewhere for Samsung prices and as I say it hasn't even been launched in Holland so I can't compare Dutch prices for myself.
It's not even on the Samsung website here, it's as if it doesn't exist.
I'd rather buy a Pentax from SRS than a Samsung from Amazon anyday but at those prices you'd be insane not to.

It seems that the £200 Samsung-Pentax price difference is closing - sadly the Samsung is going up rather than the Pentax going down

With all due respect for such a veteran as yourself, why is it a daft question? The two cameras are virtually identical and the CMOS chip in the Pentax is actually manufactured by Samsung.Quote:

It's a shame you had to be so rude on the other Pentax forum about people offering their opinions here for you. You also failed to understand the 3 smilies that impotentspider had on his post

I'm sorry I don't agree - three smilies or not the poster considered my question contemptible - 'daft' in fact - and I hardly think that saying so is rude - in fact I think it was rude of him/her not to offer a sensible answer to my perfectly reasonable question. It's a shame you had to be so rude on the other Pentax forum about people offering their opinions here for you. I'm considering a purchase of some considerable cost here - maybe as much as £800, which is a lot for me. It is certainly not a joke.

That doesn't excuse you being rude to others who have posted in this thread for your benefit - which you did. That is not a joke.

Let's not let it get out of hand. Smilies exist because the written word can so easily be misinterpreted and a smile smiley is meant to convey a pleasant and friendly meaning in a post. Three smilies especially so.
I would assume it was meant as a light hearted and pleasant comment intimating that the answer, at least on a Pentax forum, was obvious. The other phrase for this would be "tongue-in-cheek"

The bodies are slightly different, and the firmwares are different, so, similar as they may be, they are not the same camera.
Anyway, I think anyone on a tight budget would be silly to buy either right now. They've only just been released! The prices of both brands will fall (and perhaps one by more than the other).
You need to be rich to be an "early adopter" of technology. If you are not, you get a far better deal by buying the next best model - some long time after it has been introduced. In this case, it's the Pentax K10D.

My reply was not intended as a slur on your post nor did I consider it contemptable, it was simply to inject a little humour into the forum, MOST of the members here appreciate it and often reply in kind, it breaks the tediousness of answering the same old questions over and over. I am deeply sorry for not knowing you lacked a sense of humour yourself.three smilies or not the poster considered my question contemptible
I shall slap my own wrist and make a mental note to be 101% serious when answering your posts in future.
As regards rudeness, a lot of people may consider it rude to join a forum for a particular brand then ask if they should purchase another, they may be a "similar" camera but they are definately different brands.

Lets not forget that the K20D as is exists because of Samsung. We should also remember that we discuss Metz flash guns, Sigma and Tamron lenses on this forum as well Really we are talking about Pentax and Pentax compatable equipment and in that regard the Samsung is deffinitly Pentax compatable!
Lets face it, some healthy (and compatable) competition can only benefit us on the price front.

As for the 3 smilies - the saying 'many a true word spoken in jest' comes to mind. Using smilies as smokescreen for rude comments won't work with me - words carry far more weight than cartoon characters.
Finally, I was not aware that 'blasphemy' against Pentax is not allowed on this forum. In the UK freedom of speech is still highly valued. If you are 100pc confident in Pentax as a brand then you shouldn't feel threatened by comparisons with other brands.
Surely the purpose of this forum is to enable intelligent discussion between people with something in common, namely, in this case, Pentax products. It would be a bit pointless if it were only some kind of self-congratulatory organ for people with closed minds.

As I have previously explained, I have been using Pentax kit for over 30 years - that must surely say something about how I feel about Pentax products. As regards rudeness, a lot of people may consider it rude to join a forum for a particular brand then ask if they should purchase another, they may be a "similar" camera but they are definately different brands.

I think the Samsung and Pentax companies and brands are closely linked enough now for questions abut Samsung dSLRs and lenses to be fine here.
It would be better if the discussion was more friendly, though.

The minimal difference in price between the Samsung body only offered by Amazon and the Pentax at SRS makes the Pentax more attractive to me.
Body only: £621.05
Body + 18-55: £668.82
Body + 18-55 + 50-200: £716.61
I reckon either someone at Samsung got their sums very wrong, or Pentax have told them not to undercut them by so much.
Or they've realised they can actually make a profit on them by selling them at a 'proper' price.
