It will work - just set the lens to manual, which is how the 1.7 is used with any auto lens.

Maybe it's an indication off a DA*400 and a bit more exotic lenses

If you put an Pentax K or A 50mm for example on it the TC also still focus right?
You will only have a problem if they just like Nikon take out the screw-drive in the lower end bodies, but since they say the DA limited will keep the screw-drive I wouldn't worry about that too much.
