PENTAX K5 VIDEO

looks interesting.
I'd be interested in hearing about the technical side of shooting with the k5.
shooting modes? technical difficulties? Workflow issues?
Shooting times and battery life? Heat issues etc...

Hey Don,

The shooting modes are...

1080p 25/30 fps
720p 25/30 fps
and smaller size, i think it's 640 x 480 or something. You can adjust the quality of video between 1-3 stars.
If you set your camera to RAW then you cannot shoot in HDR mode or use the in camera cross processing (which is very good) The in camera functions are very powerful but work best when shooting JPEG, because you have full control of in camera processing. The battery is pretty good but will die out faster when shooting video. I have a spare battery as part of the deal when I got mine. The K5 auto focusses fast and doesnt make as much noise when firing as previous models. All round a well thought out and built camera, I have not bed comments so far.

I find it better to use fixed lenses when filming because you can fully control the aperture unlike with the zoom lenses.

I seem to recal saying "who wants video" when the K7 came out, I had a play with my K5 last night and have already ordered a 16gig class10 card to get me started

I think I need one of these to play with and test on a real set. It looks suspiciously like the 7D regularly "dies" a heat-related death, so the only real option is a 5DMk2. Several K5s would be cheaper

Have to check what the story is with frame rates and then talk someone into letting the company borrow one along with a 15 and 35 limiteds

Now you can video yourself eating your words

Something that doesn't often get mentioned is that Pentax have chosen AVI as a video format, whereas most other brands use AVCHD. This is good news if your PC isn't a great performer, I gather. I was told my £200 refurb PC wouldn't cut it and I'd have to get a higher performance machine but no, it's fine.

good news and bad news...

bad news: bigger files, and faster memory cards required...
good news: if you are chroma keying, the avi format and hdv format both key better than avchd....
avchd also is like saving a file in a highly compressed jpeg versus a tiff... when it comes to color... you have more to work in post...

but this makes sense to me... after seeing an i7 box struggle today on rendering a short scene and the inability of Premiere to render on a farm, the less post work to be done, the better.

Yeah, agreed with Bret, I hardly had to do any post on my footage... I just shot it, and what you see is what you get pretty much. I didn't need to boost any contrast but did just to play with it, but it isn't noticeable unless you see the unedited clips next to the final version. K5.. welcome to our world
