But then it would not actually be small, it would end up another me-too NEX-sized beast. (And they are rumoured to be announcing just such a camera later this year).

But if you want something like that, you can just get an NEX and a k-mount adapter.

Pentax has a range of pancake lens, it will not end up like the NEX.

Look at how small the FUJI X100 is. I have one and it fits in my pocket. I wish the X100 has a fix 24mm lens which I wish I can change to something a little longer sometimes.

So if pentax Q with APSC sensor match with Pentax pencake sytle lens would be wonderful.

The Q has the same size as the Canon S95, so my point is that it is in a different class. Also the lenses must be much smaller. Here are the dimensions:

Pentax K-R 12.7 x 6.8 x 9.7
Fuji X100 12.5 x 5.4 x 7.4
Pentax Q 9.8 x 3.1 x 5.8
Canon S95 9.9 x 3.0 x 5.8

I would like to see it in real life and have a chance to test it......

I'm hoping the aps-c version from Pentax is truly a d-slr rival in terms of image quality..... simply the best evil class camera ever.... who care if it is thicker to accomadate the k-mount? and a new line of leaf shutter lenses with built in nd filters would be a sweet bonus as well. A no compromise, no excuse Evil cam with optional evf that any pro shooting with a k5 would love to have tucked in his camera bag as a spare/second body that happens to have true video capabilities...

Here's an interesting ISO3200 IQ comparison between the Canon S95, Pentax Q, and NEX-5. Obviously the NEX is much better than the other two (it has a similar APSC sensor to the K5 I believe), but the Pentax Q is actually significantly better than the S95, and not bad at all. Maybe on a par with an older DSLR like the K10D? I am guessing it will be pretty decent under ISO800.

To be honest I also find the S95's performance pretty good for a compact.

The NEX-5 is streets ahead

still gets it ass handed to it by the kx though... so a k5's aps-c sensor in a bigger Q, combined with a kmount ltd prime will kick all thier butts.

I'm just not seeing the Q being significantly better than the S95 based upon the pic you linked to. The Nex-5 is but that's to be expected.

It's not really relevant though is it? I don't buy compact cameras to use at ISO3200.

A lot of this argument against the Q, even before it's properly seen, is based on preconceptions about its inability to cover extreme situations better than much larger cameras.

Nobody expected 35mm film quality from half frame or the Pentax Auto 110, but we had fun seeing what they could do. There wasn't such a reactionary stance to something new in those days. No internet perhaps.

I'm interested in seeing what a raw file from the q looks like when shot at low iso under studio lights...
would bet the files are clean enough to sell. as in close enough to a 12 mp d-slr that it is pointless to argue...

I've sold images from the I-10 and W90 and also the X90, so I don't see why not.

Smeggy, did you click to enlarge the image? The Q image is much less mottled and a lot smoother than the S95 image. Given that the S95 is an incredibly good compact (check it out against the TX5 on Imaging Resource), this is a good result from the same size sensor. Ok both cameras are obviously thraped by the Sony, but that's an APSC sensor and a bigger camera. You could almost say bulky and unwieldy in comparison

And no, you wouldn't use such a camera at ISO3200 anyway, but the quality at that setting holds great hope for what it'll be like at ISO400 to 800...

Perhaps it's because my expectations for this camera have been lowered by the Optio compacts (sorry John!) that I find the results from early tests of the Q so encouraging

I think the Q is a lovely, but pricy camera. I expect there will be a market forced price adjustment. At least I hope so.... because the NC-1 will need to be lower priced than the Q, unless of course it comes bundled with an all new leaf shutter lens and k-mount to compete with the nex, nx and 4/3 sensor cameras...

Actually I would love it if this camera was like the Auto 100. Because then it would have a Micro-Four Thirds sensor.

It is the internet that reminds me MFT is the same as 110 and the Pentax Q is not even in the same league. Don't shoot the medium!
