Let me get this right. You considered the camera defective so you tried to sell it to a member of the forum.

That's a little dissapointing.
Agreed.
Did you read what I said Robbie, in no way have I ever considered the camera defective, if you look at my portfolio and check the photos taken with the K7 I don't think they are defective and as I said I got fed up with the inconsistent results, do you think I would try to sell something
defective on this forum? I don't think so!
Jack.

But I do feel that the new 'Flagship' model K7 should be sorted, right out of the box, with no major tinkering needed.

The problem is that the lenses are as much as fault as the camera.
You could of course send the camera plus the lenses to Pentax and for a fee they calibrate them all for you so they work perfectly together however if you get a new body you've the same problem again.

The other option of course is to use tighter tolerances but then your camera and lenses would cost twice as much

No problem, it's a bit of an eye opener

The following has put me right off buying a Sigma 120-400:

"The Tamron 70-200 f2.8 is joining the Sigma 120-400 and 150-500 (45% failure rate) in the Lensrentals Hall of Shame: lenses we no longer carry because their failure rate is so high we just can’t afford them. Almost half of them have failed, usually after 3 to 6 months in service".

Lucky long zooms don't tend to be my thing then, as this wipes out a fair proportion of the affordable ones beyond the 55-300!

I have a couple of Tamron Adaptall's - the 180 SP (stunning) and 200/3.5 (cheap as chips and surprisingly decent), plus a Tokina 80-400 ATXii which does a fine job for the occasions that a longish zoom would be useful. As I've had no problems with any of the above, I think I'd best keep them.

But back on this thread, I think it might be interesting to compare the images using the Tokina on my K-7 and K100DS bodies - my assumption is that at normal viewing sizes, the 6MP camera will hold out remarkably well, not least because it is less likely to show up flaws in the lenses. And viewed at actual pixel level, I would expect the K100DS to look sharper. Some food for thought when I have some spare time....

I must admit, I have a travel kit: istD + 18-55 II and Tamron 70-300 LD Di, I use it usually when I'm on 2 wheels. I can't fault the 18-55 at 6mp on the istD but it's a different story on the K20D @ 14.6mp, but still very acceptable for a kit lens. Those lens repairs are a little worrying, but AFAIK they don't stock anything in Pentax fit.

Is there a thread or article that someone can point me to that will explain as to a fool how to check your (focus plane) and then if needed change it. How do you check for 'back' focus or 'front' focus. Many thanks.

Well George I have to disagree with you, it is not the first thing you should do,

If you buy a camera worth around a 1000 pounds I think it should take perfect focused and exposed photos from the start, the fact that you have to start making these changes is unacceptable, you might as well buy any point and shoot camera that does work correctly,

Jack.
What you have a right to expect, and what you should do, in the real but imperfect world, are two entirely different things, and they should not be confused.

That forum post is just a copy of the link I gave in the previous post. In the original, pictures appear in correct relation to the text, and you'll find links to downloading test charts.
