Pentax K7 Unsharpness

I've been a Pentax DSLR user now for 3 years having owned the K10D, K20D and now a K7. I've been using my brand new K7 for about 2 months and the results have been unsatisfactory with the images appearing unsharp and with an almost slight out of focusness about them. The results from my previous cameras were definitely sharper in comparison. I shoot in RAW and I've tried different lenses with the K7 but with the same results (lack of sharpness). Not sure what the problem is or what to do about it. Can anyone advise?

Can I suggest you do an experiment by turning off the shake reduction? I know of a number of people who have experienced problems when it is switched on, especially around shutter speed of around 1/125 sec, which you really wouldn't expect an issue....

... if your shots without SR are sharper than the ones with (and I'd aim for 1/125 at around f8 in decent light with a 35ish mm focal length), then it may be that the SR in your camera is at fault and may need to be looked at by Pentax.

Welcome to the forum! Suggest you post some examples, making sure you don't strip out the EXIF data.

I have as an experiment just recently been using the camera with the SR On and Off to see if there is any difference. But whether off or on the images still apprear unsharp.

Love to see the comparison, have you got an example from your K20D and the K-7 using the same lens?

Wasn't that just with the K-x or is it other models as well?


Have you tried using the AF micro adjustment to fine tune a lens to see if you can get a sharp shot that way?

Nope - K-7 too. I know *isteve had this issue as we were chatting about it before he made the move to Nikon.

For what its worth: Just come back from Safari - Last year took the K20 and caught some good images (11 made it to the PPG!) This year, took the K7 and must agree, the results were nowhere as good - quite disappointing in fact. Deliberating about keeping the K7 and maybe buy a second K20?

Now you know why I sold my K7, I have had some good photos with it but is was so inconsistent with focus and and exposure issues I got fed up with it, I prefer the K20, but I have moved on and not looking back,

Thanks all for taking the time to comment. I'm not sure how to display photos on here. Trust me though, the results I'm getting from the K7 are below the standard that I've got from both the K10D & K20D.
I haven't tried AF Micro Adjustment because I'm slightly worried about making things worse because it's not something I've done before.
mayday & jackitec, I feel your pain. I expected better. Makes me think of changing camera.

For goodness sake, do the AF adjustment. It's the first thing you should do. You can't possibly make it worse (unless you are unusually inept, and I very much doubt that you are).

hi is this using afs or afc mode, i find the k7 struggles using afc, it just doesnt seem to snap in to focus like the k20.

I'll give the AF Adjustment a go tomorrow if I get the time.

not had any problems that i can think of with afs, will double cheack.
