Interesting set of results. I'm not really a HDR shooter, but I do sometimes use HDR1 when shooting into the sun, or in situations such as woodlands with deep shadows and pools of light.
Your HDRs of the lighthouse haven't worked well using the in-camera settings. I wonder if there is actually that big of a dynamic range in the first place, given the 0EV image from the bracketed set has no burnt highlights or black shadows?
The software-based HDR images have provided a lot more contrast, but I wonder if you could have achieved similar results by adjusting levels, since the camera captured the full dynamic range of the image in the first place?

It's looking like a good night for a sunset and unlike the day I was photographing the lighthouse, it's not blowing a gale or raining. Hopefully I will be able to get down to the beach to try some different settings.

To be honest I would be surprised it it was as good, never mind better.
Presumably it's only there to save a bit of time, just like all the other filters.
Like Will, I only use it if there is deep shadow and to be honest most of the time I forget it's even on the camera

I did take another couple of example shots with HDR1, a while back...

On (after levels adjustments):
The straight-out-of-camera image was very muddy, which is why the levels needed adjusting. Presumably I should have set the EV comp a bit higher? Anyway, the jpeg was impressively detailed and noise-free.

The big problem with HDR seems to be that it changes the
grass and trees to a very unnatural colour
