pentax k1000 advice needed

i am looking to buy a pentax k1000 on ebay and am unable to contact the seller, could someone please verify from the pictures that this is one of the earler metal bodies models and not the later plastic ones for me?

I second JR's advice. A seller who won't communicate doesn't inspire confidence. Having said that, this particular one is a very frequent seller of Pentax items.

I've had a look at the item on eBay and on the face of it it looks very nice. The lens included is an f1.7 which is not what the K1000 was originally shipped with - as far as I know it was always an f2.

Other than what we can see there is no way of telling if it's a metal or plastic K1000, and according to a repairer that I was recently talkin to it makes a very big difference.

However, if the price is right.....

Boz's site says that older K1000s had Asahi on the prism above the word Pentax, and newer ones don't. This one DOES have Asahi, so the chances are good that it is an all-metal version.

hi, you say the lens is an f1.7 as opposed to a f2, is this better or should i be holding out for an f2 ideally?

F1.7 is better. This number indicates the maximum aperture of the lens. A lower number means the lens will allow more light through, which means you can take pictures in darker conditions.

Of course, every lens is different, so it could be that the F2 lens was optically better than the F1.7. However, all Pentax 50mm lenses are very good, and the F1.7 is certainly not inferior to the F2.

I mentioned that the lens was an f2 normally simply because it indicated that the body and lens were probably not originally bought together. The f2 and f1.7 lenses are exceptionally good, better, in my opinion, than the more expenseive f1.4 which sacrifices resolution for very high contrast.

In the case of the screw thread lenses, the f1.8 and f2 versions were sometimes actually identical, with the f2 version simply having a mask inside to cut down the maximum aperture!

In summary, all the 50mm lenses are of a very high standard and differences will only be noticed with very large prints.

When you factor in the shipping from the USA to Malaysia they are both far too expensive, can you not find something closer to home?

I can get a friend in the States to buy it for me, but I have managed to find a Malaysian seller, so hopefully that goes well. Thanks for the help
