It should work/focus fine on your K-r.
What have you compared it with? Could you post some sample shots?

Mine's razor sharp!... Try using your eye's to focus rather than waiting for the focus light to come on...I found it was much better than the camera telling me it was in focus!....good luck

If the camera isn't finding focus with the f1.7 then it's likely to be even worse with the f1.4.
Is any point in the images sharp? I'm just thinking the camera may be locking focus on a point other than that which you intend, and at f1.7 that's a very tight distinction.

Well that's true, but the point is to calibrate the AF.If the camera isn't finding focus with the f1.7 then it's likely to be even worse with the f1.4.

I have a FA 50/1,4 and a Sigma 30/1.4 and I've calibrated the AF on ech and it works fine.
You cannot rely upon the standard focus screen to manually focus at 1.4 anyway as they cannot resolve DOFs that shallow.
if you want accuracy when focussing at 1.4 then use Live view magnified, get a replacement focus screen that can show it or calibrate the AF

Thats the problem I have. I've discovered that the lens focuses in front of the af spot but i can't adjust it, the settings don't appear to make any difference! what can i do?

FA 50/1.4 is not going to be sharper than FA 50/1.7, only significantly more expensive. If I were you I would keep FA50/1.7 and try to work out AF calibration as was mentioned...
