Pentax DSLR EXIF Data in Different Programmes

This diverts the EXIF discussion that has been ongoing in the thread about the K3 .... I am conscious that we don't want that thread to be overtaken any more by complex exif discussions, but I do think it is an important topic to explore, so here's a new place to do that!

We've seen confusing data reported by other members such as 'hard' settings for contrast and sharpness, 'normal' for metering mode. I do not see these descriptions as matching or relating to any Pentax camera settings, but there has been some debate about that! Also it was said that Photoshop will report all of the Pentax metadata.

So, just to round off this little diversion into the world of exif reporting in different programmes, I've loaded one of my K7 DNGs into Photoshop and also into Pentax Digital Camera Utility to compare the usefulness of the information .....

1) Photoshop ....

here I used the file menu, 'file info' option and this opens a dialogue with a group of sub-options on the left ... the botton of these is 'advanced', and this opens on the main part of the dialogue a number of sub-groups of data collections. The first of these is titles 'http://ns.adobe.com/camera-raw-settings/1.0/'

Here I find the following items of interest ....

Temperature 6050
Tint +15
Exposure +1.50
Shadows 25
Brightness 59
Contrast +48
Saturation 0
Sharpness 25

Now, none of these has much immediate significance to me.... apart from the colour temperature and exposure they don't equate to any obvious known direct camera settings .

Now, I have an old version of Photoshop, so I also opened the file in Photoshop Elements 8, which has a later version of Camera RAW (updated well after the K7 was released), and I found exactly the same settings as listed above for Phtoshop CS2 within the 'advanced' section. However, here in this later version of Photoshop Elements there is an additional 'Raw Data' tab within the file info dialogue, and here I found the following :

Contrast 1
Saturation 2
Sharpness 2

These clearly make more sense as camera settings, although this list of data did include a lot of other rather baffling fields, such as ' Exposure Mode 1, White Balance 1'.

Now the same DNG opened in PDCU ....

Here I have :

Metering Mode - Multi Pattern
White Balance - Daylight
Fine Tune AB - Amber 5
Exposure Compensation -1.0
Autofocus Mode - Single AF
Autofocus Area Mode - Automatic
Saturation - 1
Hue - 0
High / Low key adjust - -1
Contrast - -1
Contrast Highlight --2
Contrast Shadow - 1
Sharpness - 3
Fine Sharpness - 2
Shake Reduction - Enabled

Now clearly, this list is more what we need . These settings are directly a report of the actual camera settings using the exact same numerical values or word descriptions.

Even the three understandable photoshop values (contrast, saturation, sharpness) do not match the PDCU figures, and there is no further intelligible information amongst the jumble of data listed in the PS file info dialogue.

So, I can only conclude from this little test, that my earlier assertion that PDCU is the only programme to correctly report all of the Pentax camera settings is true .....

I can not find any meaning to much of the Photoshop file info, nor to the generic type like windows properties that reports things like 'hard' or 'normal'.

So, am I right ..... is the only way to get reliable and accurate data reporting from Pentax DSLRs to actually use PDCU ??

PDCU is created by Silkypix ppl as far as I know. Unfortunately, SilkyPix (as supplied with the K-0, the Q, the MX-1 and K-50) shows only a limited EXIF. So it's next to useless to show all the EXIF tags.
PIE shows them all.

However, EXIFtool will extract the meta data verbatim from the image file and save it to a .txt file

This issue of 'Silkypix' being provided instead of Pentax Digital Camera Utility crops up sometimes .... was it also issued with the K30 I remember?? It seems bizarre to me that the same PDCU is not used and updated to cover all the Pentax cameras. Based on my testing so far I would not expect a standard version of Silkypix to offer much intelligible information, no more than Photoshop seems to anyway!

Now the metadata extracted from the file is not much use unless it is translated and presented in a way that matches (maps to) to exact camera set parameters .... this is what PDCU seems to achieve with its wealth of helpful data. I'd assume that in order for any third party software to offer this ability that it would need to be updated regularly with Pentax - specific coding ...??

EXIFtool is extracting exactly what's embedded, not it's own interpretation. And is platform independent, no interference from Windows.
EXIF is a standard and tags that can't be understood by various softwares are ignored and then stripped when saving out the edited JPG.
But I'm over this discussion already.. You might be trying to convince me that anything but PDCU is wrong, but I don't buy it. But you are allowed an opinion too

Look, its not about right or wrong ... no doubt the tools you mention do extract the base data ... I saw loads of information in the Photoshop file info dialogue (things like 'Saturation 25') etc .... loads of information that did not directly present the same values as the actual camera settings.

Its about the usefulness of the information ... thats what I'm questioning. If someone is going to be advised to, for example, reduce the contrast setting they use, then (for example) if they had started off with a setting of '+3', then you'd want to see that in the metadata .... then you advise say 'try +1' ..... its not much help to see something like 'Hard' .... you can't advise to try 'less hard', or 'soft' .... they don't exist on the camera! The only thing that makes any practical sense is the exact actual numerical value as set on the camera.

So far, from what we're seeing here, the only software that correctly and fully provides all of this helpful data is PDCU. What actual use is any of the other data shown in some of the alternative tools that have been mentioned ... is there anything useful?

Amongst the mass of data I saw in Photoshop, the only really useful fields were generic things like focal length, camera name, copywrite holder, flash on / off .... in most cases the PDCU values were exactly as we choose on the camera .... in photoshop they were something different, something that felt like an unreliable translation.

See technical point #2:

link

The standard defines a MakerNote tag, which allows camera manufacturers to place any custom format metadata in the file. This is used increasingly by camera manufacturers to store camera settings not listed in the Exif standard, such as shooting modes, post-processing settings, serial number, focusing modes, etc. As the tag contents are proprietary and manufacturer-specific, it can be difficult to retrieve this information from an image or to properly preserve it when rewriting an image. Manufacturers can encrypt portions of the information; for example, some Nikon cameras encrypts the detailed lens data in the MakerNote data.

So could it be the case then that Pentax are not updating or providing their camera - specific data into this MakerNote format? But then again, do users of other camera brands get all their custom image settings correctly spelt out in third party exif readers or even industry-standard software? Surely it can't just be Pentax where that is not happening .....

My concern here is that there may have been an assumption amongst Pentax users that they had a reliable data record within their files, easily viewable and understandable .... and that this is not in fact the case ... that we actually need to use PDCU to view accurate and full camera setting information.

Seriously haven't paid much attention to this conversation, but it's potentially the other way around. It looks like there is a section allowed for, for the company to do with as they please. Other software may not make use of it at all, or if Pentax have changed their format in this section it then wouldn't make much sense to any other software that was originally using it. The onus would be on software manufacturers to stay in touch with however Pentax and other brands were using this ungoverned field over time.

Personally I don't really care if I'm honest. I don't go near this info at all, and focus on the final image. I can see how others might use it though, despite it not being part of my personal workflow.

I would say its use is more for image analysis after the taking ... such as looking at where things have gone wrong (which is the scenario that this all arose from) and where certain settings might have an impact.

Apart from just the JPEG custom settings there is a range of other very useful information that is displayed in PDCU .... eg the metering modes, AF mode, AF point selection, the exact WB fine tuning setting (eg 'amber +5), flash compensation ... a whole lot of good stuff if you're looking into how you've set up the shot and the impact these things might have.

What I find amazing is that this information is only available in PDCU, and yet it appears there has been this assumption that it is all there laid out in other software, 'extracted' ready to be seen and understood .... but I am just not seeing evidence of this at all .....

Did you look at the EXIF tool output (link in my post) and compare it with what you see in your version of PDCU?

OK, I've seen it now on the phone (EDIT and thanks for posting it too!) ..... there's a hell of a lot of data there, granted! Looking though initially we get the same sort of things I saw in PS ..... then there is those strange contrast / saturation/ sharpness fields that report 'High / Normal / Hard' (??) .... later there is some more on these , this time ' saturation - normal / Contrast - Med High / Sharpness - Med Hard' ... so I'm not sure about those .... we need to check the K3 manual to see if those descriptions are real (the previous models as we've seen use numerical values).

Then we have some Pentax specific data, which is great to see .... eg 'Image Tone - Bright' (thats a custom preset), 'Shake Reduction - On (AA Simulation Type 1)' / 'White Balance Auto Adjustment - Off' 'Tungsten AWB - Subtle Correction'.

So this is the most extensive collection of data I've seen outside of PDCU.

Then there a few custom paramaters, but I'm a little curious about these as they all show a 'O' value .... High/Low key adjust / Contrast Highlight / Contrast Shadow / Fine sharpness - Off'

Not sure about 'off' ... certainly on the K7 there is no Off, but rather a 0 setting in the middle .... and also the presets would have enabled different values for the individual sliders (they would not all be zero) .... so this is puzzling, but it may be we just need to know more about the K3 custom settings and how they differ from the earlier flagship models.

But, yes, Steve, absolutely .... there is a lot of good data there! Some contradictory and repeated, but I guess you could learn which ones to use reliably. I'm not sure on the custom settings values of zero though (???)

Thanks for showing that tool .... it seem to be be most comprehensive after PDCU itself, at least from what we've seen so far.

Here's one of my 2013 K-7 files. Note there are two entries for sharpness. Under EXIF it is described as HARD the other (under makers notes) as +4.
It would seem to me that Pentax use both.
