Pentax DA 50mm F1.8

I thought the difference in price between the 35mm 2.4 and this could be justified to some extent by the quickshift. It's highly incompetent to officially announce a product with a major feature that it doesn't have. Definitely overpriced. I don't like this new strategy of hoodwinking customers.

One of the reasons I chose this over the FA 1.4 was because I thought it had quick shift, It has been my only disappointment with the lens, I am generally pleased with it, it seems sharp and have not experienced the purple fringing that I occasionally get with the DA 35

PS John thanks for the clarification

Some lenses, such as the DA 55-300 (but not the optically identical, but less expensive DAL version), and the DA17-70, allow you to move the focus ring manually even when the camera is set to AF.

This means you can adjust the focus after the AF has acted, or, more usefully IMO, you can manually move the focus ring close to where the AF will put it.

Lenses without QS won't let you move the focus ring without it rotating the whole screw drive, including the AF motor in the camera. This is a) much more difficult, and b) generally thought of as a practice not to be encouraged.

They will if you've got a Pentax camera with a focussing select lever. I just flick it to manual and away ya go

Well yes. Setting the camera to MF disengages the AF drive completely (although not the AF sensors of course).

The point of QS is that you don't have to switch to MF to be able to rotate the focus ring.

Er, that's why it's quick shift

Well the CA control looks far better than my FA-50 F1.4.
However the price on SRS - £235 - is just plain silly! The Canon f1.8 is a mere £99, and the Nikon is only £114. so to pay more than double than that, I will not!
I don't blame SRS, but Pentax pricing.

It is a shame, as I would have been very interested in this lens (even with the FA F1.4)

I only hope that the launch price actually comes down to a reasonable price in due course.

Trust me it's overpriced at £99

Oh, one other thing.
Have you noticed the filter size on this new lens? - 52mm

My FA50, F28, DA35, DA21, DA40 all have the 49mm filter. So that means my (not cheap) polorizer will fit all of them. Not this new fifty though

It may be a small point, but notable though.

Rant over!

Yeah, it is a great bonus, my DA15 and DFA100 macro all have the 49mm filter, very handy when travelling lite, just one little set of filters and screw in hood does the lot (not the hood on the 15mm though )

Two points:

First, it's absurd to suggest that this was a deliberate attempt by Pentax to mislead. It's obviously an error, albeit an unfortunate one.

Second, it's equally absurd to compare the price of this lens with the prices of competitors' lenses until it has been properly tested and its quality ascertained.

The days of high quality 50mm lenses at low prices are over. At one time, everybody had a 50mm. Now (nearly) everybody has an 18-55, and that is why those can be sold so cheaply.

Yes. Irritating!! But you could leave a step-down ring permanently attached to the lens. It will not vignette.

(I have a 49-28mm step down ring permanently attached to my 50/1.7 - it's my 'lens hood' and it doesn't vignette!)
