What I find the biggest shame is all the popular mags only seem to concentrate on Canon, Sony, and Nikon, and to a lesser degree, Olympus. Maybe John should should submit an article for publication in one of these mags to show amateurs who are getting into DSLRs for the first time that there is more than just the aformentioned four names.
when i was looking to get a DSLR earlier this year, I spent nearly all my time looking at the 'big four' and then it dawned on me that back in the late 80s I had a Pentax compact zoom film camera (not so compact actually). So, looked up what Pentax had to offer, and pound-for-pound was more impressed by the solid Pentax. A friend of mine popped round last weekend. He does stock and uses a Nikon D90. He was more than impressed by my K20. His first comment was 'it feels good to hold doesnt it!' He was talking about the camera!
I'd be interested in peoples comments on their colour settings, so I'lll start a new topic so as not to annoy John.
You might not have been looking at the right sites or magazines. When I decided to jump into DSLR just a few quick searches and immediately it was clear to me that Pentax had to be the one. One of the sites I usually go for advice and unbiased reviews is this

I just can't be bothered to learn them for the few times I might need them when I know that this lens can focus much, much faster
In this particular case (the DA* 60-250) the problem is that the lens is capable of focussing more than twice as fast as it does, a point which Amin can verify as he was there when I discovered it using one of the PP K-7s, as well as Will at SRS and I think it was John from Pentax. It's just that for some reason the performance has been throttled back on purpose, if I had to guess it would probably be for reliability issues.
The point is it can focus faster but it doesn't and I don't have any choice in the matter, this is why I can't be bothered to learn fast manual focussing techniques with this particular lens as I believe I shouldn't have too. So with respect, in this example, it is the fault of the kit. Had I taken the Sigma 100-300 F4 with me instead I know I would have got the shot as I did at a previous match, but chose the 60-250 instead as I wanted better quality.
The problem I now face is that I have to choose between better quality images if I can get them (DA*), or getting the images with not as good quailty (Sigma). To be honest, I want quailty and speed. To be prevented from using my kit to it's full potential really p***** me off, why should I have to learn other skills to get results that the kit is capable of?
If I hadn't found this out I would agree with you, learn your kit more, get better results is something I have learned from this forum. But when you are in a unique position in having seen your lens focus more than twice as fast as it currently does, it gives you a completely different point of view.
