K7 vs D300

Latest copy of Amateur Photographer apparently has a review of these . K7 comes out pretty well and is given 86% this time round .

I am going to take my K7 out this weekend for the first time and take its virginity !!!!

Just a quick one, it is against the 300S (video version of the 300).

There is only one point I like on the 300s over the K7. It has dual, different card slots and still keeps CF. The cards can be set to record different files, eg. video to card 1 and still images to card 2 or fill one card and automatically move to the next.

And I'm still buying a second K7 body.

The focusing is faster on the D300 most of the time but besides that there is very little in between them.

We already had many of these topics so look them up.

I am aware of the pros and cons Stefan, was just saying there is another comparison out .

I thought the review was well balanced but i could not find any reference regarding the lenses used for the test, If the Kit lens was used on both of the Camera`s then the Autofocus is almost certain to be inferior on the K7 especially in poor light. An Ideal test would be to use identical independent lenses (with appropriate mount,) The Same Subject, Lighting, etc. As i have suggested in earlier threads, The Kit lenses do little to enhance the qualities of the K7 in reviews like this. It would do Pentax well to pair it with a Kit lens that was comparable with those offered by Canikon. The DA* lenses show how good the Camera could be with a quality piece of glass fitted! I am not proposing that these become Kit Lenses but you get the idea!

Must disagree with you on this point Pete, the kit lens is as good as the manufacturer wants to make it, presumably Pentax knew they would be compared to other makes, this was their chance to get one over on Canikion, unfortunately they blew it, again.
It is not reasionable to expect comparrisons to be made with 3rd party lenses; it creates to many variables.
The odd thing is everyone knows that Pentax AF is slow compared to the competition, presumably Pentax know it as well. I am very happy with my K20, but then do not need fast AF in low light, if I did I would probably not have a Pentax.

It is no big deal, what did we do before AF?

Hassled and Bladdered medium format jobies do what they do best and Pentax do their bit.

I don't understand why such a fuss is made over AF speed by so many people.

For fast moving subjects, fast AF is going to be a big plus. In everyday use by most of us, it makes no difference whatsoever beyond bragging rights.

The SFX already focussed faster than I can manually, more than that is a bonus in my humble opinion.

Now focus accuracy, that I can see why people would get worked up about, but it never seems to get mentioned.

I have no idea who is best at focus accuracy, but it seems to me that, all things being equal, any AF system design should be a trade off between speed and accuracy.

Why? Using the same lens on every camera for every test would enable you to compare the intrinsic quality of the sensors, which is surely desirable.

A camera test should not be muddied by a test of a cheap lens that an owner may well choose not to buy.

The consensus has been that Pentax have opted for accuracy over speed.

Actaually it isnt a big plus as it will not follow fast subjects. It's all to do with relative speed of object to camera and distance.

An aircarft always appears to be flying too slow to be up there right. Yet if at an air display and a jet passes at 400mph + it's a phenominal sense of speed.

F1 cars are always photographed in "capture" spots, never head on whilst flat out. Bends, corners or from a long way off with a 600mm lens. Distance is very helpful for fast objects, relativity being wht it is.

Also, for long glass, AF can be a problem and so manual focus is often used, especially for wildlife shooters. (Did the AF lock onto the nose or the eyes)? e.g. the Canon 1200mm is MF. Also a tad expensive.

If and when the AF finds it hard to focus, I just switch to manual...so AF in not a problem with me. I I could have the choice between the two I would thak the K7.

Hi, My point was that we don`t know which lenses were used for the test.
As they did not specify. The test results did not include any lens info at all, So to make any comparison of AF qualities of the CAMERA then one would need to keep any variables to a minimum.
