Pentax Beats Olympus

I've just read the AP review of the new Olympus adapter to allow OM lenses to be used on the new 4/3 system Olympus DSLRs. And what a lot of restrictions on the useable apertures, both because of performance issues and because of potential metering errors.

Compare that to pentax where any lens from the A series onwars just fits and is fully useable. Pre-A bayonet lenses can be used in Aperture priority and manual modes and still need no adapter. Even screw thread lenses can be used utilising the incredibly simple Pentax K adapter for less than £15 outlay.

The OM adapter costs £100 and allows only limited functionality.

So, I reckon Pentax beats Olympus and very convincingly too. Full marks to the Pentax Engineers and to the inspired design of the K mount!

Before you gush too much, just remember that Pentax originally did not make the DSLR's fully compatable with M and K series lenses. Some of those lenses are older than most people on this forum, but they're excellent glass.

After a howl of protest went up, Pentax released a firmware update for the D that allows the use of the old manual lenses.

Hopefully they will get rid of the "crippled" KAF2 mount, and make the next camera easy to use with all K mount lenses.

Yes, but they all do work, and the technology allows for it.

Actually, the same adapter is available for various lens mounts, including the M42 and the K mount. They're made by a third party manufcturer. You could use your Pentax glass on an E-1 if you thought it was worth the trouble.

I'd have to buy an E-1 first, and I spend enough as it is....

I'm still saving up for that 12-24mm Pentax lens!
