I wish to use my K-20D with the Remote Assistant 3. I should like your thoughts as to what reasonably priced notebook/netbook I should get as a dedicated machine. I am going to do interior photography and the Assistant will help me to decide better to either delete or save an image.

I use an Acer laptop 2Ghz processor and 3gig of ram, you should seek similar specs in the machine you want. I paid £350 for mine. Only really tried it to see if it would work havent used it for extended periods.

I've never been so fond on acer, one had the DVD writer connected a bit strange so it could only write at 1X speed and the other the screen died.
Asus seems to be a good, they used to build the apple macbooks and have worked on them, thosiba was very good but they are a bit less now from what I heard, but my grandpa has one which is still going strong after 3 years.
My step-mother has a HP and my mother as well and they work good as well.

Maybe this one:
Asus K50C-SX002A
Intel Celeron C220
Intel Mobile Chipset
2GB DDR2-800MHz
250 Gigabyte Harddisk 5400rpm SATA
DVD-Rewriter Dual Layer
Intel GMA4500m
15,6" TFT Display Wide LED Shine Display 1366x768

€ 399,- is the price so that would be around £350
RAM is very easily upgraded for £30 you can add 2gb more.

The battery will last for 1.5 to 2 hours with this one.

Thanks guys. PC World has a sale on in London, so I will cycle by and have a look what they have on offer.
Stefan: My HP Pavilion is now 5 years old. It has lost couple Hard drives, due to virus invasion, memory upgaded. But bit heavy to carry around. So am looking for a lighter machine to be dedicated for my camera only.

Netbook might do but I don't know if the screen on those are good enough to really judge a photo correctly on them.

The ASUS Eee PC 1101HA has a fairly large screen for a netbook with a high resolution for it.
11.6 inch across 1366 x 768 pixels, so that's quite good and the battery life is up to 11 hours so more then enough.

I picked up a Toshiba NB200 netbook a few months ago and the screen's fine, although it has some touchpad issues that make me wary of recommending that range.

I would avoid PC world like the plague.

Ms Smeggy has a Toshiba laptop and it's fantastic. She bought it direct from Toshiba UK themselves. Sorry I can't remember the model number

I should clarify that I was talking about touchpad problems associated with the NB200 series. Other Tosh products have a super reputation.

Smeggyoint taken. PC world were quite professional in my HD recovery. Although they could not recover anything, they went about the job in quite a diligent way. And in the end did not charge my anything, because they could not succeed...

So, perhaps I should just pass by PCW to see what's on the market, rather than buy anything from them.

Remote assistant is a pretty poor piece of software, you'd be as well using the screen on the camera. Why would you want to make a save/delete judgement on location?

gartmore: that may be true. Is there an affordable alternative, without going into the realms of 'pro' software?
The decision on location would be just for the 'hopeless' images, which I do take from time to time..

I'm with Ken in the sense that decisions on which to keep are best left for later. OK, an occasional check on the camera that all is well is fair enough, but contsantly checking images whilst shooting does lead to missed opportunities.

Shoot first, ask questions afterwards...
Best regards, John

Johnriley: Fair point...as I often take a number of the same scene, slightly from a different view and settings, the assistant on location becomes somewhat redundant...
