Hi, another designer pouch. Wow!!!!
I have yet to find or see a so called "Designer" pouch which is of any real use.
This people think they know, what equipment I have and how I like to store it. The "designer" is trying to force his Ideas on to me.
I am sure, this designers may have held a camera they have been given to look at , but never have used one in the field. They have no idea what a bag should be like.
This things are most useless and cost an arm and a leg.

Horst - I can send you a bag with an "exclusive" label... My missus has loads of Harrods carrier bags lying around at home!!

I've never understood the concept of "designer". Every camera bag has been designed by someone. It's a ridiculous use (or is that abuse) of the language.

Gareth - as you may (or may not) recall, I work for a courier company that specialises in the import and export on behalf of the garment industry. One such company in Hong Kong that manufactures underwear and lingerie (for example) is called CERIE INTERNATIONAL. They manufacture for George @ ASDA, Ann Summers/Knickerbox, and an exclusive label for Sheridan Ferdenzi. Now, can somebody explain to me how George can sell these garments for a fiver, when virtually the same thing costs at least 10-20 times that amount for the Ferdenzi stuff?? Surely the quality of the material is similar, as the QC department will have certain tolerances they must work from, including the quality of the raw cloth?

As you rightly point out, "designer" in this sense is a flagrant abuse of the english language!!

It doesn't look very special does it?

For what he probably got paid I could have designed a camera shaped bit of black leather for half the cost

Is it waterproof? showerproof?

For that price I would expect water/dust/radiation/vermin/theft proof, but then I'm picky

Are we talking about the Marc Newson pouch? Pentax reckon 300 mugs - ahem, sorry - style conscious consumers will buy this limited edition item at c$300.

Good luck to 'em! Ker-ching...

Its a designer world and when one has a designer stuff, he/she is telling everybody that he/she has arrived. No comments, good luck to them.

Maybe one day, we get a "Designer Camera".
It doesn’t need to be able to take pictures, but it could have a streamlined lens, sort of pointy on the front. A green hue to show it is up to date with the current trend. Maybe a multicoloured body, a gold plated release button and a great big emblem on front and finally a price tag of at least 10 Grand.

I'd love to have one of them, or maybe two. One for everyday or when I go to a party and the other, when I go to the theatre. Wow!!

If I could afford it, I would get one for the Wifey too. We could then each carry one and are admired, when we walk slowly down the Avenue

Designer cameras have been around for many years. Gold and even platinum Rolleiflexes, gold Pentax Spotmatics and LXs, Leica special editions, I even had a Helmut Newton Rolleiflex 2,8GX at one time. There was the 180mm Olympic Sonnar as far back as 1938 I think.

These are either for collectors or for special use, such as looking impressive at society weddings.

Designer cases at $300 will no doubt sell to those who have money to burn and want something very exclusive to prove it. It's a market, I don't knock it in any way.
Best regards, John

OK so it gets the Pentax name (or is it just the designers name) out into the world of the paparazzi, so I suppose every little helps. But if it's bulk sales that are the end game then sponsoring "Miss World" or getting the name stuck on the side of Jensen Button's tyre testbed would probably acheive more

Then if it helps to fund some R&D I would agree but 300 off at $300 is chicken feed (especialy when the 'designers' fees/material costs/manufacturing costs are taken out)

One of my wife's businesses is acting on behalf of spectacle frame manufacturers in Wenzhou, China. The cost of the frames they produce sell for $3.00 to $20.00 depending on the quality of everything from the hinges and manufacturing difficulty to the actual material used. SOme of these frames are sold by independent wholesalers and others by very large 'designer' labels such as Boss, Ray Ban etc. The retail street prices for those $3.00 to $20.00 wholesale cost frames range from $50.00 to $500.00.
