With the Pentax-A version, you need to leave the lens on the "A" setting to get full functionality with your camera. Notice the little unlock button you need to press to get it onto "A".

It's normal to display "F--" when the ring is off the "A" setting. The lens then can only be used in Manual mode (except for the largest aperture).

i have set the "A" part right over to the left hand side where i believe it should be for a function but it still says F--

You need to turn the aperture ring all the way to the right (smallest aperture), then press the button next to the A and turn it a little further. You have to press the button before you can put it into or out of A mode.

I'm not sure if you have the A in the correct place. It should be at 12.0 clock on the lens and locked in by the button.

Clean the electrical contacts on the lens if you really have tried it on "A". I bet it isn't properly on though.

Notice the green mark directly lined up with the red mark.
