Is this 300mm is optically equivalant to the FA (or F) 300mm 4.5?

Thanks.

Hi,
I haven't used either of these but I have used the A* 300/4 which is the same lens with the A setting. It is fantastic. If you want to have a look at various views on these lenses try here http://stans-photography.info/
Optically there would appear to be little difference in performance. The M is a little faster and won't work with a "crippled mount" AF camera. The F version gives autofocus. I don't think you would be dissappointed with any of them.

I also have the A* variant which is, I believe, optically identical to the M*. But I believe the autofocus f/4.5 is a different design (9 elements in 7 groups as opposed to 8 elements in 7 groups, according to Cecchi's book, though he doesn't list the M* at all so isn't completely reliable as a source). It's an excellent lens though with a heavy front element and non-internal focussing it does "creep" quite a lot when held vertically.
