Hi, I'm looking to for a lens to supplement the kit 18-55mm lens that came with my DS. I'd be interested in any experience with the above mentioned lenses which might also be used on my manual bodies (MX or LX).
Thanks,
Rowdy
I got the Super II version of the Tamron and I am very pleased with it. Allthoug because of the huge front element and the large number of elements inside the lens you do get some flare from the sun. You do need the lens hood for this lens.Hi, I'm looking to for a lens to supplement the kit 18-55mm lens that came with my DS. I have no experience with the newer version of the lens. I got the version with the 72mm filter thread.
The sharpness is ok, to my eye it is somewhat better then the 18-55 kitlens. But it is nowhere near as good as a nice prime or the top quality zooms like the 16-45. The large zoom ratio doesn't really help in terms of sharpness.
But with some minor tinkering in PS (something you have to do anyway with a DSLR) the results are good.

I like Tamron lenses and the 28-200 for it's range, is very good.
I have the power-zoom version of the Pentax FA28-105 and it is absolutely superb, just a touch soft as 28mm wide open but very good when stopped down and the flare control is excellent. I imagine that the manual zoom version is optically similar and I'm sure that you wouldn't be disappointed.

I've aquired a second hand FA 28-105 f3.2-4.5 (manual zoom) and tried it out on my DS. It does appear a little soft at 28mm but CA appears to be well controlled. It will make a useful travelling companion. Intrestingly in the same test my old Pentax-A 35-105mm f4 zoom appears to be slightly sharper across the range, although I can't rule out that the easier manual focusing may be a factor.

I bought the Pentax 28-105 3.2-4.5 IF for my MZ6 and it is excellent. very sharp and one of the best zooms in the price range.
When I bought my DS2 I had to wait for the kit 18-55 so I used the 28-105 for a couple of weeks and got excellent results.
The 28-105 is one lens that I will definitely hold onto. Another is the Pentax 80-320 which was a surprise given the price.
