I've not used the Sigma but I can vouch for the Pentax 16-45mm it's been the most used zoom I've ever owned. Razor sharp and a decent range

The 16-45 is f4 while the Tamron 17-50 is 2.8 and that extra stop can make the difference and I find it is a good lens although I realise you didn't mention it.
But I haven't used the 16-45 so I can't comment beyond that.

With the current price of the DA16-45 you just can't go wrong! Second hand prices are stupidly low.
It is incredibly sharp, very resistant to flare, and a nice size. Don't let f/4 put you off - this is a top notch lens
The new DA17-70 looks extremely tempting, and the DA*16-50 is lovely (but larger and heavier and more expensive!).
Hope that helps!

I purchased the 16-45 from SRS a few weeks ago, and although I was seriously tempted by the 16-50/17-70, at the price it is at the moment it was a bit of a no-brainer for me!
It's a very nice lens, and I've no complaints with it at all.

The Pentax 16-45mm is used for 90% of my photography - a superb lens at a very low price.

there was a detailed comparison test in AP 29 March 08 for the pentax 16-45 f4, pentax 16-50 f2.8 and sigma 18-50 f2.8. AP's overall scores were 86%,94% and 88% rspectively but you really need to read the report to appreciate what was said.
e.g they commented very favourably on the pentax 16-45 as per the other contributors but if you need a f2.8 lens the vote was for the pentax.
hope this helps

What would you shoot at 2.8!.....portraits?.....for general photography and landscapes it is a spot on lens,I use mine for landscapes and the like but never at F4 or anywhere near that, mostly @f11 to F22!...but what do I know I'm just a beginner!.................

The middle apertures usually give the best results in terms of absolute quality, providing the lens is a good one. Cheap zooms tend to improve all the way down towards f16 or maybe even f22, but that's a bad sign.
Much of my photography is shot at f8, unless DOF requirements dictate otherwise.

I wanted f2.8 for two things, more limited depth of field and also the ability to shoot in lower light. I was always finding that I was using the kit lens at its maximum aperture and I wasn't happy.
If this link works then it answers your question but not my photograph:

I find I use f4 quite a bit, well enough, and wouldn't want that to be the maximum aperture. That said I wish the Pentax 16-45 had been cheaper when I bought.

I bought a 50mm 1.7"A" for that purpose!...£40 on ebay!...It's a superb piece of kit, crispest lens I've got..........I was stung as well with the 16/45, I dont understand why Pentax then produced the 16/50 when they could have given us it the first place!.....to make more money I suppose......

The 16-45 has been around a long time. Not that long after the *ist-D was released.
The 16-50 has SDM and weather sealing - two things that weren't even thought about with the *ist-D

I suppose 3 years is a long time !....but not if you bought the 16/45 just before the 16/50 came out!
