All the photo magazines you'll find on the shelf (except BJP) are varying degrees of rubbish, driven by advertising and targeted for readers who haven't yet figured out the internet exists. They have to repeat the same stories and helpful hints over and over again, in order to fill the gaps between advertising. If they got into the important considerations of photography (politics, aesthetics, ideology) they would alienate a readership brought up to hate anything that might hint at intellectualism.

I am not sure why anyone pays attention to them.
Listen to my albums free on BandCamp. Or visit my main website for links to photography, etc.

Well, the adverts are quite interesting... I flip straight to the Mr Cad second hand listings etc, unless there's a 'controversial' test to pore over.

I usually keep to the 'Big 4' - PP and PM do go through phases but some of their recent articles have been top-drawer

I ignore the Digital issues as they seem to cater for just the D3000/D60/D5000/D90/EOS Rebel/EOS 60D market, you just see that when they have techniques on how to set up the camera it's always the Canon or Nikon budget models. Much better to give the generic settings... ie ap priority 1/60 sec f11, dial in so much exposure etc etc and refer to manual (ie that mint and pristine booklet that is still in the box which is full of very useful information) to see how to set the camera....

I ignore the tests, prefer feedback from real-time users. While it's not my favourite lens, I like my Samsung lens....

My immediate wicked thought was that the owners of the cameras mentioned need to be spoonfed as they mostly set the camera on "auto". Pentax users are more advanced!!!

(please no angry Canikons - I jest!!!)

The 12-24mm is probably the sharpest lens I own.

Mags are always a bit hit and miss. How many times have I seen the "how to use depth of field" article since I got interested in photography at the start of the eighties? I almost never read reviews. I do, however, like Ivor Matanle's (is that how you spell his name?) old camera articles (although his Canon bias often shows through). "View Camera Magazine" is mainly images (yay!) and Black and White photography has some good stuff (although they have gone off the boil since I first subscribed). At least they aren't an excuse for soft porn any more.

It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera… they are made with the eye, heart and head. Henri Cartier-Bresson
Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

Ever read Slivershotz?
They pick some interesting artists some times, not always very good though and sometimes it might not be to your taste but you will at least see many different faces to photography.

Good thing is they don't review cameras!
They do have an article about today's films and photographic papers and how they preform.
Scanning, archiving, framing, ect.
Also most of the time there is a photoshop article out of a book.

I wonder how the widespread ability of 'other sources of naughty pics' affected the sales of photography mags? My dad had a stack of them in his wardrobe (under his ginormous tin of weed) and they were quite racy back then!

I had a stack of Penthouse, Playboy, Escort, Razzle and Fiesta. Actually I still have the stack, which is in the loft.

They might be worth something on the vintage market in a few years

Another dig at Photography Mags - the price. You can pick up a whole book for less from Ebay or Amazon. Something like Approaching Photography by Paul Hill should help us to 'unlearn' all those trite 'how to' articles

Will they die a slow painful death or will a series of asteroids hit the earth juts big enough to wipe out Photography Mag companies and leave everyone else unscathed.

MUWAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!

from what I've seen from other users, and the review on PentaxForums, this lens is as good or better than the 18-55mm and therefore a pretty good lens.

And of course they ought to work even harder to reduce sample variation!
This is what I've been thinking about the 18-135: Klaus clearly knows what he's doing, yet the images posted by users (there were some great ones of Paris in a thread on DPReview) are much sharper than those his copy could achieve. Yet this begs the question: why did Pentax Germany tell him that the lens was operating within specification?

The 12-24 is certainly a good lens: it got a good review from Photozone, and even Ken Rockwell described its optics as 'very good' (for comparison, he described the original Sigma 10-20 as only 'fair' - the Sigma is sharp!)

EDIT: Loving the general contempt for photography magazine howtos on the website of a photography magazine
