Hi, I own a Pentax F 50mm f1.4 lens.

I can not find any reviews on the net or any prices on Ebay for it.
It seems I have the only one example of it.
All the reviews and Ebay sales are for the FA version.

What is the difference optically between the two?

Does any of you know?

Regards, Horst

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

There is no optical difference.

Thank you both for your information.
Pentax must have made a lot more FA's then F's, so it seems.

The FA, which is still available, has been manufactured for far longer than the F probably.

The F's are quite rare really, only made for a short time between the A and FA models. With the 50mm F.4 it was only around for 2 years. Other examples include the 28mm (1987-1989) F 50mm F1.7 (1989-91)

Pig ugly really, but optically well up to the job. Some models are exactly the same (the fifties) and some are different F28mm v FA28mm.

Personally, I would say if you enjoy using it, keep it. Then again if you want a lens that is optimised for digital and you have a desperate need for one, sell it (as F's for some reason are fetching good money these days - I paid £180 for my superb F28mm) and buy a DA50 or DA*55. Then again, keep it and enjoy using what is a fine lens.

Good explanation, Thanks for that.

Well beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I think it is better looking than the FA version. like I think all the F versions look better than the all the plastic FA's .

I bought this as a set in a pawn shop it came with a F 35-70mm f3.5-4.5 and a SFXn Camera. the lot cost me $AU80.- .
I never used the camera, but quite often the 50mm f1.4 and mainly the 35-70mm. This has really become my favorite, especially since I straight away bought a good lens hood for it.

Another vote here for the looks of the F series, quiet stylish and the retro looks great on the k-01 too.

I have the F50/1.7 (bought for £20 in the '90s) and the FA50/1.4. The F50/1.7 feels better built, the FA50/1.4 has a much smoother focus ring when focusing manually (as have my other FA primes). It might be my F50/1.7 though as it has a rough spot about 0.6m on the focus ring.

You won't sway me, I still think the F's are pig ugly, don't like the focus ring and the style (grey with red lettering) is VERY 80's.
Still the FA's are not much better but the small primes are cleaner looking. Mind you the FA limiteds are beauties.

Still in the end, they are Pentax lenses and I do love my F28mm and FA50mm

Now if only Pentax could bring back a nice fast 135mm that does not look like the F135 or FA135, as both of them are a serious breach to design....

Edit:- I must not forget the FA* - Beautiful......

I agreee the F/FA 135s are really ugly! There isn't a FA* 135mm though....?

Yep - the F series lenses are not the most attractive, with the exception of the F*300/4.5 - I've been dating mine for a couple of years now and I still find her beautiful

I wish there was an FA*135 Womble, but no hope there. What I should have said was the FA* lenses, like the 24mm, 85mm, 600mm, 250-600mm etc.

Although the F's are ugly as sin, my 28mm is optically superb, and having a different glass spec to the FA28mm, it seems a superior lens, possibly the best 28mm Pentax made. No wonder they fetch good money.
