PEFs as picture files ?

How do I get XP to recognise PEFs as picture files ??

If I connect my k10 (or sd card) to my pc with jpg files to download, it pops up a dialogue to load into LR, but if there's ONLY pef files it offers me file explorer. Have tried to register file type within folder views, but failed so far

Anyone help !?

The PEF is pentax's own RAW format, so it won't be recognised by Windows.

You need a RAW converter and a simple one was provided with your camera - Pentax Photo Laboratory.

I think you have to use the Pentax raw converter first to turn the .PEF files into JPGs. AFAIK Windows doesn't recognise .PEF files.

Why would I need a raw convertor, when I have LightRoom (LR) !!

I think u missed the point, I want windows to recognise there are picture files to download, I don't want to view them, just auto download as it does with jpgs ! It recognises them )jpgs) as being on the media and loads up LR to download them. I want it to do the same with my raw files. If I have just 1 jpg on the media then it knows what to do and opens up the download dialogue box ! Understand ??

No, that's not what I'm after either ! I don't want to VIEW them !

When I connect my camera (containing JPGs) to my PC, it pops up a dialogue to ask if I wish to download these files to LightRoom, right !? If my camera ONLY contains PEFs then this does NOT happen ! It does not recognise PEFs as picture files, so no AUTO download ! Got it !?

Stu,

A simple question in reading your posts, have you recently upgraded your operating system to either VISTA or Windows 7?

If you have, you are going to need to reload your camera software to the computer from scratch. Then Windows will know that the .PEF files are photo (image) files and then ask you what you want to do with them in the download. If you already have re-installed the Pentax software, see if there is an update for either of the two Windows versions and update. I recently went through something similar when I updated from XP to Windows 7.

There shouldn't be any problems with any version of windows, at least I haven't had a problem with XP or Vista. You do need the Pentax PEF codec installed. I think I downloaded it from Pentax Japan

After advice (found elsewhere) I installed the Vista version and it works fine ! Other advice suggests upgrading to SR3, if not already done.

I think all you needed to do was to check the 'File Types' tab in folder tools from any Windows Explorer window.

Chances are that the PEF entry was missing for some reason, and it's been added back by installing the Codec.

Sounds like you are sorted now anyway.

First thing I checked and it was there, but I couldn't associate it with LR !?
