I was originally indifferent between the two and initially wanted to do DNG but then found this review: http://www.thephoblographer.com/2011/02/04/the-complete-pentax-k-5-review/I'm surprised that anyone uses PEF now to be honest, DNG is less processing and more future proof - as unlocker mentions storage costs are now pretty insignificant so why not make life easy

The guy suggested that Lightroom removes purple fringing better in PEF RAW than DNG RAW.
Now someone on here also says PEF saves card space (which makes sense since I know about the embedded JPEG in DNG) which makes PEF an even better option. Faster clearing time and longer lasting SD. Nice!
I have to disagree somewhat with the future-proofing. As long as you have a working copy of Adobe Lightroom, you can convert all PEF to DNG as easy as 1-2-3 (+ some CPU processing power) - like I did with all my (Panasonic) RW2 to DNG. Why worry about future-proofing then? By the time PEF dies, everyone probably has computers fast enough to mass-convert PEF to DNG (with an older version of Lightroom) in like a second.

He doesn't mention any comparison between PEF and DNG regarding PF.Our test camera displayed unattractive purple fringing in strongly back-lit images (mostly manageable in Adobe Lightroom if shooting PEF RAW)
When I find time I will shoot a similar strongly back lit scene in both PEF and DNG and compare LR's performance. I will wager there is no difference.

Yo don't even need Lightroom to convert PEF to DNG. Adobe's free utility DNG convertor does teh job fine.

But I very much would like to see your test as well.

Didn't know that at all. That makes future proofing even less important then.

"I had better results with PEF files than DNG."
very unspecific though.

which is why this needs testing properly. I'm supposed to be getting my K-5 replaced by SRS tomorrow ( Frotn focus fault ) and I have to pack my K-5 up tonight in readiness for the courier pickinh it it. so as soon as I have new one , I'll test the difference. But I very much would like to see your test as well.
I admit I can't understand why there would be a difference, but keep an open mind.
The thing not to do of course is take 'reviews' as fact

I've always shot DNG. I've noticed no difference between PEF and DNG IQ, but never compared PF editing in LR with both formats. So I look forward to testing it. If anyone else wants to test as well geel free
