Jpeg on K-5

I've used the K7 for JPEGs in similar circumstances - AWB, max quality image and otherwise as default. No problems with image quality.
Your cards will give you something in the order of 800 RAW images, if you use the cards to their absolute limit - say 700 practical. Lot of images in 10 days, given at least 1 will be tied up with travelling. Highest day shutter count I've achieved was 180 or thereabouts on the boat in Doubtful Sound. If I'd been shooting RAW, probably halved the number.
I guess it really depends where you are going to go and what you are planning to do - some incredible places in Spain which will strain card resources and others which you'll find just won't cut the mustard.

I am off to Spain soon too for 14 days and, as I shoot raw, have decided to take laptop + 320GB ext hdd, rather than cram all on to cards !!
Only a few kilos extra and I can view what I have taken at the end of the day + use LR to adjust !?
Just a thought

Lived there for a couple of years so 800 images will probably do me actually. I may just switch between the 2 as needed.I guess it really depends where you are going to go and what you are planning to do - some incredible places in Spain which will strain card resources and others which you'll find just won't cut the mustard. Had considered that but my Bigma only weighs a few kilos and I am now having yet another lens rethink.

Need to get familiar with it brfore you go Mike. I have only tried jpeg once on my K-x. Reason was to boost the fps. I lost some highlights which were unrecoverable, in situations where it would have been relatively easy to recover if I'd shot in RAW.
In my case, the in camera highlight correction may have helped.

I would just buy a few more cards and continue shooting raw.

I usually shoot RAW+, but only resort to actually using the PEF file if there's something wrong with the Jpeg which is rare.
I wouldn't hesitate using Jpeg only in good light, you can still alter the WB if need be but with decent lenses AWB should cope.
The K-5 has more pixels than the K20D so sharpness shouldn't be a problem, possibly test sharpness on +1 before you go.
Set the underexpose/overexpose warning on the preview histogram and the histogram to show red green and blue histograms.

I think Tim (Thoughton) gives the best advice . Buy a couple of extra cards at the airport on your way through.

I took the 17-70 and 60-250 to Norway, and only used the 60-250 twice.
If I'm flying that is pretty much my standard kit now, with a flash thrown in, and a CPL which fits both. Occasionally the Bigma goes instead of the 60-250.

Before deciding to take a laptop, I had already thought I would take my Ext HDD + card reader and find a PC somewhere to transfer from SD !?
Maybe your Hotel ??

If we want to travel light then the image tank goes, just to provide backup, but mostly now my netbook and mini HDD travel with us.
To really travel light I'd just take spare cards, and make sure I lock them as I fill them.
Hotels may not be keen on letting use their computers for transferring photos, unless they have a public one. In which case it may or may not have USBs for your use. They don't want you importing viruses onto their system so may not allow sticks and drives to be used.

I normally shoot raw but as I have limited card space (2x8gb and 3x4gb) I thought jpeg may be a better option. I have never used this setting before on any dslr I need some pointers as to the best settings to use?
Thanks.
