I've just sold two items on ebay with buyer to pay by paypal

so far all is good

I received the money and posted the Items all well and good so far

looked on my paypal account and should have a grand total of £66.49
but my balance is £53.41 paypal has taken £13.08 that's around 17%

why do they charge so much

last week i purchase a lens and had to pay £6.90 just to transfer funds from my bank account into a paypal account (it said gift fee)

Sounds an awful lot to me, I just checked my business account and the most I pay 3.4% for recieving funds.

There must be some other charge taken into account, do you pay your ebay fees with paypal?

EDIT:
Just checked my personal account and I was charged £4.82 for recieving £135.77 so there is definately something amiss with your figures or balance James.

Same here. Paypal fees come down to 3 - 4% This is the normal rate for a while now.
Best regards,

Martin.

Yes, I presumed that included Ebay fees which make it about right.

oops

I ordered some sd cards and they used the balance from my paypal and the rest from my bank account.(how clever, but it didn't show as a split payment)

I am a ebay and paypal virgin (sold a canon rebel 2000 for 6.90 that will teach me to but a reserve price on an item)

James

i must be getting old this was soooooooooo much easier 10 years ago when you just sent a cheque or paid cash

Don't worry James, we all have had a beef about Paypal charges at some time or other, usually when they go up!

But we still use it because it's easy when buying/selling on Ebay.

[/quote]film cameras on ebay fetch nothing these days unless they are a particularly collectible model (an LX or equivalent). I'm quite impressed you got that much for it.
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help
