Hi

I have searched the forum and the topic of insurance does not seem to come up much and when it does it is purely focused on inuring gear when traveling. Maybe some of you can help me here though.

I want to insure my gear but I don't want to take out separate insurance for gear alone. So ideally, I would like contents insurance that will cover me at home, in the and around the UK and abroad as well.

I would ideally like to keep the cover cheap but extensive. Hard combination.

Does anyone know of any insurance policies that will cover my home contents including my gear at home and away.

Or is it better to have a separate policy for my gear. I don't have that much but after breaking my lens at home I would like to mitigate against future expenses.

There is also a poll so please vote

I insure (at the moment) with Direct Line, I have X amount of cover for valuables away from home (worldwide) I also have an additional amount that is specified to cover photographic equipment and this also covers for accidental damage, this is worldwide too.

Unless you have any single item over £1000 it is unlikely your insurer will want things itemising, though it is a good idea to make sure your insurer fully understands the value of the equipment and to also write onto the schedule that the cover taken out is for photographic equipment.

When I started making some money from photography I checked my home insurance and found it did not cover professional use So, I shopped around and went with Aaduki. They also offered public liability at a reasonable price.
EDIT: Didn't need itemising either (only required for individual items in excess of £1k)

The terms are very good (probably as a result of a £150 excess), but they've been very friendly, informative, and helpful. Thankfully I haven't had to make a claim... so I can't comment on how well things turn out in a catastrophy!

Hope that helps!

Another vote for Aaduki, my gear is insured with them and I have found them to be very competitive.
